Brushes their teeth 2-3 times a day, flosses daily. Hasnt been to a dentist in over 10 years for a cleaning and am being told they need a filling, crown, and a root canal. They went in there originally for a cleaning, was told they had a cavity, was recommended to a dentist by an oral surgeon, and then suddenly now they need a crown and root canal.

Seems sus to me. Im finding out youre supposed to go to the dentist every year apparently. News to me.

If theyre really concerned about it, they could always go to another dentist for a second opinion.

I remember when I got a new dentist, the very first time I went to him he recommended I get my wisdom teeth out. Literally every other dental professional who has ever looked in my mouth has commented about how straight my wisdom teeth are and how they have plenty of room. Never went back.

When I first started going to my current dentist he recommended the same thing. After declining a bunch of times he made a comment that suggests he recommended the surgery because it made it easier for him to get into the back of my mouth for routine procedures without those extra teeth needing attention too.

I went a few years without going to the dentist and needed a bunch of fillings despite brushing and flossing and flouride mouthwashing regularly.

The cleanings serve a purpose. It's not like they just bring you in every six months for shits and giggles. You don't go to the dentist for ten years, you're going to have problems. And that wouldn't even account for problems that might be related to things unrelated to brushing/etc.

Did you get a 2nd opinion after that or was your mouth in a lot of pain? Seems weird to me is all.

Not a lot of pain, just sensitivity. I didn't get a second opinion, the dentist was someone my brother recommended and used so I didn't really care or suspect foul play.

The sensitivity has been gone and I've had no fillings since, so they definitely did something.

The sensitivity I believe. I think a lot of people are satisfied as long as someone they respect recommends the business or the staff is friendly. Once the work piles up I start to question it.

Holy hell.
Unless they have very good teeth genetically and have great technique to go along with your good habits, then yeah not going in over 10 years can lead to those issues.

A dental cleaning from the doctor is practically necessary periodically due to the modern diet of the average person and how it affects our teeth. Good flossing and brushing can only do so much.

This. It's basically a guarantee that he needs at least a few fillings

Even with regular brushing, 10 years is a long ass time to not go to the dentist. The issues are likely legit. Second opinion couldn't hurt though.

10 years!? Yeah I have a feeling there probably are issues. You can brush every day and still get plaque. Its the stuff they scrape off your teeth each time you go to the dentist. Its a great place for bacteria to grow. I cant freaking imagine how much there was after 10 years.
