It's a F2P MMO and part of their monetization historically has been that additional questing zones are locked behind either paying a one time fee for them or subscribing. Earlier this year they made all main content up to level 95 free permanently, but in addition to that there's currently a promo code that allows you to permanently unlock all other non-expansion quest packs for free, and the three expansions prior to the newest one are available for like a dollar each.

They're still coming out with new expansions too. Next month is a smaller low level focused one, but rumors are after that we're getting a Harad or Umbar focused one.

I wish we had a good Lord of the Rings MMO

Man I played the free content for awhile and it was kinda fun, I liked the crafting system.

Nope. The base game plus the Mines of Moria, Siege of Mirkwood, Rise of Isengard, Riders of Rohan and Helm's Deep expansions are all free now. I don't think any of the content between Helm's Deep and Mordor was part of an expansion so you can get all that free with the promo code in the first post.

There's some F2P limitations on stable master travel and some other stuff though I think. And they get mounts later than subscriber characters. They reduced some of the restrictions this year so I'm not totally sure anymore.

I tried going back like a month ago but while my account was still there my character was gone. Only level 60-65 so not the hugest loss but I didnt really wanna start fresh and so much like the virtues system turn me off. Love the world though and the story journal though.

I ended up trying GW2 instead and stuck with with that so far.

Yeah I've not really figured out the new virtue system at all.

Yeah my husband is playing these days. He wants me to play with him and Ive been tempted to try. Just hard to find the time and energy with a toddler.

Downloading this now, as a big fan of LOTR so maybe it'll appeal.

Where do I put this free code in and any suggestions of a good class to start as? Do the races matter, save for what classes you can pick?

When you get in-game you open the LotRO Store and there's a redeem code button in the top row I believe.

My class knowledge is way out of date at this point but Warden is a pretty good versatile class, can DPS or tank, has self heals and buffs for solo adventuring plus can get teleports to every major town and has a skill that gives highest on-foot run speed. Guardian is supposedly pretty strong lately too.

Race doesn't matter much aside from min/maxing. They recently made it so every race can be almost every class, only restrictions I remember seeing are dwarves can't be lore-masters.

I put in all the details, click "sign up" and then it reloads the same account creation page with the URL updated to say "&success=1" but I never get an email and I can't use the details to log in. Tried disabling all browser extensions and using 2 different browsers.

So I guess I will not be using this coupon or playing the game

Searching on their forums confirmed this. Have to get in game and type the code in to get it all, so not the easiest unfortunately.

Yeah sorry I forgot about that when making the topic.

It's not the easiest code to redeem since it does require having the game installed. Luckily the game install size isn't huge by MMO standards

For the record Arkenstone is the top US server. Brandywine is almost equal in population but half of it is Russian for some reason, so Ark is a better bet.

It does. Raid gear and quest rewards are account bound but most other stuff plus crafted stuff is freely tradeable.

You have to get in-game to enter it unfortunately.

You do have til the end of the month at least.

Also fyi theres a graphics update thats supposed to be coming. Not like a full remaster or anything Im guessing but a pretty sizable graphics overhaul thats been talked about and confirmed. Last I checked it was slated for end of 2022 but might have been pushed to 2023.

so anyone interested has a great time to start so youll get it basically free and then have the graphics update to look forward to too.

I really wish I'd had some friends to play this game with. Incredibly cozy, but I tried it recently and it feels just a little bit too dated for me now.

Yeah, I played a little bit last night and it is pretty damn dated. The graphics I don't mind really, but definitely a big downgrade to the other MMO's I played - FF14 and SWTOR. But the whole feel of it just feels old and clunky.

Was alright though, so will give it a bit more to get an actual feel of it.

I remember trying this out like 15 years ago. Glad to know it still exists. I love games that carve out their niche and do their thing quietly for the people who love them.

I wish I had time and PC that works

Huh, I've had some lagginess but zero crashing in about 10 total hours of gameplay this week. Wonder if there's a setting I've changed that helps. I know I increased some caching related sliders.

I was so confused just trying to start the game, stuck in the room with Elrond and having seemingly no way to talk to him. Tried like every button, skimmed through the controls a couple times, no idea wtf to do. Restarted the game and realized that it had glitched and just not triggered the quest, lol.

Definitely got that nostalgic feel, don't know how long I'll actually stay interested but enjoying it for now.

Thanks for the heads up. Ive never played it but ill try to give it a shot. Its been a while since ive tried an MMO and I like LOTR.

i started this up again last month. its very fun and honestly, to me at least, holds up better than old WOW

I've been enjoying it now I've played a little more. Not had any crashes and only the occasional blip of lag. So might drop the 5 to get the points for the expansions while they're cheap.

Went with a high elf champion. Is fun getting a load of monsters and then AoEing them all down.

I just went with what my original character was back in the day was. Man Warden.

I wanna give Beorning a go sometime but the extra movement speed and teleport abilities on the Warden (Hunter gets some too) are just so good for playing the main story since it's a lot of traveling. And since it's first character on a server I went Explorer for gathering crafting mats and it's great for that.

Made it to level 30 and finished with Bree-Land and the Lone-lands, and books 1 and 2 of the epic story. To the North Downs!

Got to 18 and then died due to being distracted and not looking at my health. RIP that last title at 20 for not dying.

Spent most of my free time today doing the darn halloween event. One of the chains is veeeery long, if fun. Now to finish the final deed of elf land and move on to Bree's ones so I can get riding and the expansions for free.

Yeah I gotta do some of the easier deeds to get my virtues up still.

helllllll yeah

I can't find the mordor / 3 peaks / minas morgul in the store? fate of gundabad is the only expansion listed

That as well. Finishing off the "big" deeds seems to give an absolute shit load of xp for them so already got a handful maxed out.
