not sure, but it looks like the wiki page is wrong. at one time the wording on the page was:

Until recently, it was misinterpreted as a sphincter, or circular muscle, but it is actually composed of four independent quadrants that interlace and give only an appearance of circularity.[3]

that was reverted by an anonymous user without discussion into the current "it is a sphincter, but actually it isn't" text which now contradicts itself.

not sure if this is a controversial topic or not, but there has been no argument on the page about this; the page is just kind of a mess.
