I'm cleaning out my old coffee brewing kit and discovered a pound of fairly expensive beans I had put in the box with the equipment. They were roasted about 2 years ago and have been stored in a kitchen cabinet.

They smell fine, should I risk it or bite the bullet and toss them?

Have they been hermetically sealed?

nope, it's a local roaster who does the whole "fold the bag over a few times and put one of those wire things around it

It's safe to use and drink. The only problem is it might taste bad.

Try chewing one (you can spit out after tasting). You will likely find they are dry and lacking the same amount of oil as freshly-roasted beans.

I have kept beans a long time too but only in sealed air-tight container and frozen.

Also.. if you typically add sugar / cream / etc it definitely doesnt matter.

Only black coffee drinkers like I will care.

i send them through the grinder and i was greeted with an explosion of putridness wafting in my direction.

Guess that answers that...now i gotta somehow get the rancid oils out of my grinder
