Bravely games pretty meh, Triangle Strategy does a decent job in a unique way that's reasonably compelling if not super romantic. Nier games more about family. Stranger of Paradise the friend relationships were probably stronger than the romance, though that was okay I guess. XII I think at least tries to do this with Ashe and Prince What'shisname, but the problem there is that he's dead. Balthier/Fran could have been a really interesting mature relationship if they bothered to explore it. XIII had the tragic lesbians but I honestly can't remember if that was done interestingly or poorly. It also had Snow/Serah which is lol. I definitely like the bro relationship in XV but I also think they should've done more with Luna, Iris and the dragoon. It's a miracle that game even came out and ended up being kind of okay. As for why Square/AAA games stopped trying, I think its mainly to do with the rise of customisable characters/player avatars and romance choices taking over from writing a single romance that is central to the plot of a game.
