Light defeats Near's bitch ass and kills him. Aizawa and the rest of Light's own task force catch and expose him in the aftermath. Light still spirals and desperately begs Ryuk to sort it out, Ryuk still kills him instead.

I dont think theres anyway that Light goes out in a 'heroic' way. Because of the society we live in. Especially when animes are watched by a lot of young people.

Its why we get so few films with ending where the sick and twisted guy wins like in Nightcrawler.

I need to read the manga. The anime falls off hard after the L arc.

I always kinda liked how the live action movies handled it: L beats Light by writing his own name in the Death Note first.

Near then throws the life note like a shuriken and it impales Light in the chest.
Near says "TANGO DOWN" in a low quality headphones accent.
