Sailor Stars, the fifth and final season of Sailor Moon, is kind of a big deal. The only season of the show never before dubbed into English due to its radical assertion that genderfluid people, you know, exist, its long been a subject of controversy amongst pearl-clutching moral guardians. Literally no one else cared.

Also just found out they swapped the genders of gay people to make their relationships hetro. And with one made the gay couple cousins. Was a kid and didnt realize this type of censorship took place when I watched it in the 90s. Glad the new company that did the dubs recently undid all that censorship. Surprised more companies havent been cancelled in the past for that stuff.

Very common. There's a very femme/non-gender conforming gay guy in Tekkaman Blade that was turned into a girl proper for Teknoman in the west.

Yea. I dont know how they got away with not bringing over and airing the final season in the 90s.

They also made Zoisite into a woman in the dub, while in Japan Zoisite was male.

sooooooooo much Shojo/magical girl stuff was censored as hell back then lol.

I remember Cardcaptors also got hacked up a bit for the Kids WB version lol.

one interesting thing about the final story arc was that the villains were also sailors

It's shitty, and I'm not defending any homophobic DiC heads, but pretty much any studio would have done the same. In the 90s, the majority of Americans (including a majority of Democrats) were opposed to same-sex marriage. On the conservative side of the spectrum, you had plenty of parents who legitimately thought their children might turn gay if they watched the wrong programming. Nearly every studio that produced or distributed in the US kowtowed to the gay panic of the 80s and 90s. Fox was an exception and, even then, it was only in adult animation and live action programming.

It's disgusting that people would choose not to air the fifth season because it features LGBTQ characters, but it was par the course for that era. For all of the 80s and 90s nostalgia out there, homophobia is one definite anti-nostalgia aspect of that era.

Honestly this should have been the bigger deal breaker. Wife and I watched it last month on Hulu and it was so WTF. Why not just keep her in her Neo Queen outfit? If you're going to have her nude, why give her barbie doll anatomy? Could have just cut away or used objects to cover her body.

That happened with so much anime, FWIW. Pokemon was missing several, not just the infamous Porygon Electric Soldier episode. I know Outlaw Star was also missing the episode with the onsen, and for a while Dragonball Z lacked an episode where the Great Saiyaman rescues people from a burning building; the last one happened immediately following 9/11.

Yea. Some episodes got banned because they were wearing bikinis at the beach lol.

Chances are, if the anime was dubbed in the 90's it's more than likely you may as well just watch the subs. There's a lot that got cut by contemporary dubbing companies of the time (DiC, Funimation, etc) that you're essentially lacking a lot of the experience.

Gundam Wing also had a weird time. It was definitely kept as more "adult" compared to other animes of the time (almost if not all of the outright deaths were kept in), but when it came time to bring Endless Waltz over, they compressed it into a movie that, IIRC, messed up parts of it and altered some parts of it.

That was 90's anime dubs (for television) for you. Chopped up like heck. Censored, name changes, replaced music, missing episodes....we've come a long way since.

Back in the 90s and early 00s there wasnt the internet to look this up or many options. Like Yu-Gi-Oh! is an amazing example. I grew up thinking people went to the Shadow Realm. Turns out Shadow Realm meant they died.

2 different companies dubbed sailor moon back in the 90s
DIC dubbed season 1 and 2
and cloverway dubbed season 3 and 4

overall DIC was a better dub than cloverway
they replaced most of the music with their own but their musical choices were honestly pretty good for the most part
the DIC voice cast was really solid as well aside from molly/naru. everyone else was really good

its big issue was its censorship. it censored so much to the point where they cut down the 2 part final battle to just 1 episode after all the cuts were made.

cloverway let more violence get by uncensored but they had a worse voice cast
and were super inconsistent to the point where one of jupiters attacks had a different name everytime she used it

That would have been about icecream, or cut entirely.

I remember when Macross: Do You Remember Love got a western release.
They cut away almost a third of the movie, in an extremely bad way (you could clearly see that it was cut, or you heard it on the background music) and called it Macross: Clash of the Bionoids.
Funny thing is that the European version was pretty much uncut (some gore was blurred out in some countries) and it kept the Macross: Clash of the Bionoids name.
This used to confuse me because some online forums talked about how some scenes were removed when I clearly knew that I had seen those scenes on my tape <_<

I only thought season one got dubbed but fair enough.

Reminder there was a company called DIC.

All their shows ended with the logo and somebody saying DIC.

For half an hour of fun, at the end, you'd get 'DIC'. Every single time. There would always be 'DIC'. You can count on there always being 'DIC'.

Hell, the only reason to tune in was the 'DIC' at the end.

The 2005 episode There's Something About Marrying portrayed homosexual men invariably as swishy stereotypes and lesbians portrayed invariably as masculine or a-feminine. It wasn't even in a "this is funny" kind of way, just a "these stereotypes are non-threatening enough that we hope the anti-gay crowd won't change the channel" kind of way.

That took place in 2019. OP is from early 90s different era. Ellen DeGeneres didnt even have her Puppy episode yet. As I mentioned with the Postcards from Buster episode it still got controversy and censored as late as 2005 in a lot of kids shows.

Birdo is an MtF transgender but Nintendo is all "she was always a girl"

I guess that makes her pretty successful, then? If they won't even acknowledge she used to be a dude.
