Id say the biggest issue is child care.
People cannot live on minimum wage in todays cost of living, much less pay expensive Child Care on top of that.

Disability benefits do exist, because working would obviously be difficult. So do you have an issue with that TC?

Then you have non disability benefits which many do have work requirements. So what exactly is this topic about?

that's not what he's talking about (at least in my experience). the "trap" is that anything less than a substantial pay raise (like double your current rate) is typically less valuable than government assistance to an impoverished family.

what's better financially? making $15/hr plus medicaid (you literally pay nothing in medical costs) and $300-$1000 in supplemental food assistance, or making $17/hr and having to now pay for medical insurance, co-pays, and prescriptions for you and your children, plus an additional $300-$1000+ (depending on family size) in food expenditures per month.

it's enough to make a lot of people want to stay on government assistance rather than seek raises or career advancement. my MIL has a woman that she pays cash to do work around her farm because having to report that increase in income would jeopardize the benefits she receives for her and her children

I worked at a welfare office as a social worker for a few years. A good amount of people do abuse the welfare system. Its common with women who say baby daddy or husband left the family, but dad is still at the house working a good job. They want to avoid reporting the husbands income so they can qualify for food stamps.

Yes, there are people that do it. I never denied that. But they are not a significant issue. If caught, investigate and punish them, but don't restrict the system to try and restrict them.
