General Data Protection Regulation

This law is the reason almost every web site you go to these days has you accept or deny cookies via a pop-up. It has impacted the general web browsing experience and made it a bit more annoying because every web site has their own style of pop-up, accept/reject buttons, etc. that come up in any area of the screen the owner of the web site chooses.

What the world collectively should have done, and still should do, is develop a standard around cookie acceptance so that it is uniform across different operating systems, web browsers, etc. That way if you want to receive a notification for every web site you go to, you can choose to do that and said notification will look the same at least on the same browser. Or if you don't care and just want to accept all cookies like you would prior to the law being enacted, you can do that and you just wouldn't get a specific notification.

The only times you don't get that pop up these days are for companies that have made their web site inaccessible to IP addresses coming from the EU.

The only revamp it needs is a "decline all except for the cookie that remembers that you declined all" button

Edit: or regulate browsers to request with decline intent

The revamp wouldn't be removing user protections. It would just give people the option to not need to make extra clicks if they don't want to.

I fucking hate it. Yay to having an extra step to click on for every website which makes no difference to anyone's privacy.

No amount of legislation will ever fix the adtech hellhole.
You have to do it yourself via plugins like Privacy Badger, various adblockers, and maybe even Noscript.

Browsers themselves are even actively hosing the 3rd-party cookies that drive it all.
