It's pretty common that the person moving at least offer beer or pizza or something to those that help. As a tangible way to say thanks. It also helps make the whole thing more of a social event than simply labor. Have you helped people out in the past? How good of friends are the people you are asking? October is general is kind of a busy month. It's peak fall weather so you have a lot of people doing things.
