Yea i dont really think there's anything to do with the info haha. I was like "Oh pog."

And when I said I'm really socially navigable he said yeah that's not mutually exclusive with being on the spectrum. Apparently based on a second screening he asked me to take (after my screening for an attention disorder) he said my results likely indicate it

Now i get to push duncan overboard

yea fwiw every online test i took for years placed me on there too lol. could be somethin to it

also friends, family, partners. lots of people over the years have assumed im autistic over the years >_>

i tend to make too much direct eye contact, and apparently when im not actively trying to be charming im very robotic :p

They have noticeable tics that they're pretty guarded about.

oh wow, thanks for the breakdown. that makes total sense. including the part where it can end up internally damaging. im sorry it's weighin on ya, but maybe i can relate a little?

i mean when i was like 17-21 i worked at a supermarket. had no fucking clue how to socialize or make friends, and i was suddenly in an environment with a really outgoing and wild bunch. it helped me rapidly socialize (since my life upta that point was .. complicated)

i guess i unknowingly "masked" because i just started copying what Dexter from Dexter does to fit in and be normal. it worked and i started making friends really easily, and still find it easy to slip in and out of Dextering

>_>

it's really cringey but since he's a weirdo psycho in that show but can keep it together enough for everyone to think he's a normal and cool dude, i could do it too. only thing is after a long day/week/whatever of Dextering i am WIPEDDDD. socializing in an outgoing charismatic way is exhausting sister, as u may know

but anyway yea thanks i learned a bunch!

It's the only way I can explain how I sometimes feel about noise. I can go to a concert just fine, but often in the break room or at parties when there's a bunch of distinct, unconnected sounds it's incredibly frustrating and I want to snap at someone to shut up, even if they aren't being rude.

Also I am obsessed with tactile touch

So I go to a therapist and not a psychatrist and she's said from like month 1 that I'm mostly likely on the spectrum. It was pretty eye opening cause I never really thought about it too much.

It's led to a lot of waffling back and forth if I should actually get completely tested for it, because I think it would be important for me to know to help with understanding parts of my life, but theres this other part of me that wonders if it's a waste of time. Because, like I've lived with it forever now, right? And this is just the way that I am now. Idk.

There's also this other part of me that recognizes all of the times that other people really fail in social situations and I think about how I really don't do that anymore, and I think I slowly start to convince myself that maybe I am just normal at the end of the day.

But I'm very happy for you if this diagnosis gives you some understanding

I had suspicions that I was. I tend to struggle socially, and with eye contact.

Way back when I was in therapy I asked about it. He dismissed the idea and said it wasn't the case. I guess it really is just crippling anxiety and stunted social skills. I just never know what to say and feel out of place.

I also spoke to my doctor about it, and they also said no. So... Ugh. Turns out I'm just not good with people.

ya know, every doc is diff. it's not like what they say is law, they could be wrong. if youre curious still i'd recommend a screening tbh

Eh, in this case I think they were right. I don't struggle understanding others or relating to them or things like that. It might actually be the opposite, I tend to get hyper focused on their body language, expressions, and reading their general vibe. I just don't know what to do with that info, and get freaked out that they may be doing the same to me. So, I can't look them in the eyes because I feel ashamed and dishonest for trying to hide my own body language.

in elementary school i was diagnosed with autism because i was kinda slow in school and i needed extra help. in order to receive that extra help, i needed some kind of label. i've always questioned whether or not it was a legitimate diagnosis or just a load of bullshit in order to keep receiving assistance in school.

i DO have some autistic tendencies though. i have a "one track" mind, meaning i become obsessed with a single topic without branching off from it. i dont have a lot of interests, and im socially awkward as hell. what sucks for me though, is since i've always questioned my "label", i have no way of knowing if these things are my fault or not. am i having trouble making friends because im a dumbass?

anyway, thats all i have to say. i think im an ok guy, but i definitely have issues.

Hey TC, (or anyone with some answeds as well)you mind me asking you how old you are? And also, I'm seeing just a regular therapist now, if I ever actually thought about getting screened, what's the actual process? It's just something that I'm considering and am genuinely curious about the process involved.

The reason I asked for your age is because I feel like im a little too old to start a screening process at this point.

yeah no worries. I'm 29

My screening was basically an hour or two of questions about all sorts of stuff. Questions about my past, upbringing, social situations, "how would you react if". plus some more of that in an online questionnaire too. a lot of it blends in with the memory of my adhd screening, and there was a lot of overlap, so sorry if that's not too helpful

No thats helpful I appreciate it. I'm 31 and I'm sure it's not that unusual for this age range to get screened but it's just hard to pull the trigger on.

Like I really feel like it could be a weight off of my shoulders as far as being a justification or a reason for the way I feel sometimes, but at the same time nothing really changes. Idk, it's a weird feeling.
