3 is a direct sequel to 1, and Origins is meant to be a prequel to 1, but I don't remember it actually adding anything to plot. Aside from that, I don't recall any of the other games being connected, aside from some references.

1 and 3 are connected

2 , 4, Homecoming , Downpour are seperate

Origins is a prequel to 1

Shattered Memories is a re-imagining of 1 (can be played without playing the first game, but playing the first before Shattered Memories gives you some fanservice. Also one of the endings references the second game)

Order to play: 1, 3, Origins

3 is a direct sequel to 1

4 has a minor connection to 2 and 1/3 (the main antagonist is mentioned in a note in 2 and his goal is related to the cult)

Origin is a prequel that sets up 1, but doesn't actually add much.

Homecoming is telated to the cult, but not in any way that matters.

Downpour and 2 have nothing to do with anything and are separate outside of the mention of Walter in 2.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.

1 and 3 are tied. Cant say much more than that.

So Im assuming 2 is the premier standout of the series since they remaking that one first. I wish I could play them before the remake comes out

Yes, 2 is generally seen as the best game in the series, even though I personally prefer 3.

2 has probably a better story and I think the lying figure is probably the best designed enemy in any horror game, but 3 has way way better characters, dialogue, atmosphere, and music.

Most or if not all of the characters in the other games are victims of circumstances.

James seems the most crazy because he voluntarily goes to Silent Hill.

The PC version isn't too hard to find online, and you can soup it up with the enhanced edition patch. It's what I did earlier this year.
