You watch other people's screens to get a tactical advantage.

I watch other people's screens because I fucked up knowing which one is mine and I'm driving into the corner while trying to control someone else entirely.

We are not the same.

I think it's more of the requisite of a screen being something you are almost always looking at the whole thing. It's part of the experience. Like just because someone else can do it too doesn't make it not cheating. It being built into the does though. Pretty much everyone could chear at any game, but that's not a feature of the game the way split screen is.

There was a game where everyone was invisible and the entire point was to look at everyone else's screen to figure out where to shoot (and shooting was visible so missed shots were a big problem).

The only time it's cheating is, in my opinion, an FPS game. Like, obviously the split screen was a compromise of the times, and you aren't actually meant to know where your opponent is in an FPS with radar turned off.

I remember that game. I forget what it was called, but I wanted to try it.

Also there was that sniper dude in Metroid Prime Hunters. His (her?) special ability was when he was using the laser sniper rifle thing, he would turn invisible if he stood still for a while. But the shot was a long red laser which meant you pretty much had to run after a single shot since it gave away your location.

Nope. The information is all right there. Not seeing what's on the screen is as inane of an expectation as not betting accordingly if your opponent in poker is freely showing their hand.

Lame house rules exist.

You better believe that the games were tested and balanced with screen watching in mind.

It's kinda hard to *not* screenpeak. Peripheral vision exists and good level design ironically means that you'll have a good idea of where people are if you notice a landmark.

I never went out of my way to do it, but if I get that information I'm not going to *not* use it >_>

We had a Bejeweled clone once that I found a surprising mechanic in, and my wife called it cheating. Basically, when you switch two things, it'll animate it, and if it doesn't make 3 in a row, it animates them going back where they came from. If you do another switch during the animation, it will consider both switches when looking for 3 in a row. So you could make three Os in a column by switching the Os into the middle in rows 2 and 3 below (Xs are garbage things) if you do it fast enough.

Yes, because an elaborate setup is totally comparable to looking at a different part of the screen that you (and your opponents) are already looking at.

You were certainly violating the spirit of the game, but I'd argue there's a difference between using a cheesy strategy in a single player game and cheating in a multi-player game.

I mean the idea that if both players can do something it's not cheating is ridiculous and basically makes any game ever completely arbitrary. I'm just gonna start using my hands in soccer from now on. It's not cheating because the other players can use their hands if they want too.

Regardless, screen watching takes out any form of thought or strategy in a game when you can just beeline to your enemy. What's the point of working to get the drop on an enemy when they can just suddenly do a 180 and kill you because they looked at where you were?

If I understand what youre saying, I dont think you were cheating at all. Reminds of me Pokemon Trozei or something. You get three in a row to start to get a match, but if you move quick enough, you can add to it and make it 4 or 5.

Either that was designed to let you do that on purpose, or in an era of gazillions of Bejeweled clones they somehow managed to fuck up something really basic in theirs. Either way, fair game, imo.

I have a hard time calling something a cheat if it's something you can easily do by accident just trying to play the game normally. That's a programming fault (if not intentional), not a player fault -- it's the sort of thing that should have been ironed out with just the slightest effort put into game testing.
