in either the first, second, or third grade we had a computer class because our school just got a new computer lab, but they were just powermac 5500s.

they were school computers though, so the desktop was just icons, right?

i remember watching the kid sitting next to me absent mindedly highlighting all the icons, he looked away for a brief moment and i reached over and hit enter on his keyboard. you can imagine the panic that ensued from both him and the teacher because holy shit this new however thousand dollar computer just broke what do i do, right?

anyways, that kid got banned from computer class for the rest of the year and it's entirely my fault and i am the only one that knows until now, since you all know now.

I used to freak people out by degaussing their monitors. Fun times.

Is that when you run a magnet over a CRT and it messes up the screen? Used to do that with TVs.

The opposite, actually: Most CRT monitors had an option buried in their settings menu that would scramble the whole screen for a couple moments to get rid of that magnetic interference. It rarely made a noticeable difference to the image quality, but the process made it look like something was wrong if you didn't know what was going on (which of course was true of most people in school computer labs).

On a related note, one time, I helped my dad set up a new CRT TV for a family friend, and even though we'd set everything up correctly, the picture was still super distorted. We tried a bunch of different things before discovering that the "TV stand" she was using was actually a very large old speaker with a blanket draped over it. Once we removed the giant magnet from its immediate vicinity, the TV worked fine.
