Invest it, and live reasonably well on a mere 5% annual return.

Without my current investments, then no, $1 mil is not enough for me to retire at this age. If we include my existing holdings with the extra $1 mil then yes, I can probably shut it down right now.

I could make this work. I'd move somewhere outside of the United States though.

Ooh, probably. Its not just 1 million, but a couple extra hundred thousand in mortgage interest payments. Could make good money from investing whats leftover too.

My answer would be different if I didnt have a high earning spouse.

If I can make even modest money off of it, easily.

My most basic wants are to sit around, browse the internet and play video games. I could easily do that on the back of $1M.

Mmmm just the million, without any other assets I already have saved up? I could maybe make it work. Assuming I can keep the bulk of it invested, getting a 5% return rate would mean you could take about $45k out each year in perpetuity. Obviously with inflation youd have to start taking more out in the long run to maintain a stable living situation but if you move somewhere that has a really low cost of living and start by taking out like $35k a year instead, that gives you a bit more wiggle room. Id think it would be reasonable to expect that sort of lifestyle to be sustainable for at least 40-50 years which would be enough to get me to my 70s or 80s.
