Current Events > Now that Persona 5 is out, lets look back on its long, painful hypetrain history

Persona 5 Royal is finally out on all modern consoles and PC 6 year later! But the long, long, long wait for Persona 5 to first come out back in 2017 was a fucking trip I still have PTSD about to this very day >_> Let's walk through a brief history of it, shall we?

First off, I guess the Persona 5 hype can go all the way back to Catherine on the PS3 in 2011. Atlus mentioned that the Persona team made Catherine specifically to get more familiar with the PS3 hardware so that Persona 5 development can go more smoothly and would come out sooner. lol

Then in late 2013, they announced a Persona direct that Americans had to wake up at like 3am to watch lol. In it, they revealed a bunch of Persona 4 spinoffs such as the fighting game, a RPG mashup with the Persona 3 cast on the 3DS, and then a fucking Persona 4 dancing game. People were LIVID during the dancing game reveal because they woke up at fucking 3am and thought the direct was gonna end on the literal fucking dancing game announcement with no news on Persona 5. But then they did the old "Oh and we got one more little announcement" trick, and then it finally happened....

The world rejoiced! It was finally announced! And it was gonna be out next year on PS3! People were HYPED! I bet we're gonna get all this new info soon and then in 1 short year, we'll have the game in our hands and be playing it after calling fake-sick at work! I can't wait!

...

Soooooooo sometime in late 2014, after a year of literally no news, they announced that the game was gonna be delayed (to no one's surprise >_>) They simply said it was gonna come out sometime in 2015.

Now, that year of no news made everyone go crazy and grasp on any straw they thought could be the unicorn of Persona 5 info. Before the 1st.... delay announcement, Persona 4 Ultimax came out. In it was a new character named Sho that people didn't like >_> At the end of the game, he gains the Fool Arcana (a reoccuring theme with all Persona protagonists), and later on, hackers found a line of code in the game that simply reads "P5HERO" in the character select

So obviously people flipped their shit because no one liked annoying-ass Sho and assumed he was gonna be the protag of P5 lol. This was all anyone had to go on so far on Persona 5. There was no gameplay or screenshots that were shown for Persona 5 at this time, so people were grasping at ANYTHING that could be related to it! Now it turns out that the P5HERO code was a left over from when they were planning to have him in the game, but decided to leave him out and it had nothing to do with Sho. But It just showed how desperate people were for any scraps of Persona 5 info.

So in early 2015, we finally got the 1st real trailer of the game.

FINALLY! Something to look at besides some fucking chairs! You had party members! You had a calendar! You had a mascot cat! You had a really really sweet menu! People went nuts picking apart every little detail in the trailer.

After that was trailer 2 in mid-2015. It was only available as a DVD bonus to people who pre-ordered Persona 4 Dancing All Night. Now obviously within a few days, people ripped that shit out and posted it immediately, but Atlus tried REALLY REALLY hard to squash any sign of the trailer online for a little bit before giving up.

Hell, it STILL isn't even on their youtube channel. It's just a gap between trailer 1 and trailer 3 >_> Plus this trailer SUCKS! Half the trailer is literally just reused footage of the 1st trailer with a couple new scenes spliced in. I felt bad for anyone that paid literal money just to see this.

Now, people were starting to get antsy again because 2015 was getting close to the end and there was still no concrete signs that the game was coming out or even a release date. Atlus eventually dropped another trailer with a bunch of little info like a new party member, some new personas, and some glimpses at a couple of cutscenes, but it really didn't reveal too much. More importantly it also announced the delay that everyone was expecting.....

The game was delayed to "Summer 2016"

After that after all those breadcrumbs in 2015, game development info was dead silent for 8 MONTHS! Everyone feared the worst! But then the final trailer dropped:

It had lots of new info, showed off all the party members, and more importantly, it had an actual release date instead of some vague prediction! 9/15/16! Literally 1 week before Summer 2016 was over >_>

And yeah, the game actually came out when they said it would and all was well in Japan! But this isn't the end of the hypetrain because....

What about America!? For a while, literally no one knew when this game was coming out here, even after the final trailer released with the Japanese release date! But a month or 2 later, some piece of news came out that said the game was gonna release in February 14th, 2017 to save all those lonely weebs from despairing heartbreak on V-day! America rejoiced! Obama himself probably did a backflip in the oval office after hearing this news.

......But then guess what happened next! Did you say another delay? Cuz that's exactly what happened!!! Sometime after the game came out in Japan, Atlus did some livestream where a dude came on camera and said to all the baka gaijin Americans that they had to delay the english version of the game to April 3rd, 2017.

So then finally. FINALLY. The sun rose on the day of April 3rd 2017 and everyone in the US finally had their hands on Persona 5 >_> How was the game? Well it was pretty great. But the long anticipation of Persona 5 and the endless delays basically became a meme. We went from:

Winter 2014 -> """"2015"""" -> Summer 2016 -> Sept 15th, 2016 -> Feburary 14th, 2017 -> April 3rd, 2017

If you were on the hypetrain for Persona 5 for all 4 of those years (or longer...), you know exactly all the pain and blueballing we all had to go through

So CE, what was your experiences with this hypetrain? Were you on board for the whole ride or did you skip all that pain and suffering and you're playing it right now with your current gen hardware on a whim? Do you feel a little more educated on Persona 5 after reading this or nah? >_>

tl;dr: Persona 5 took 4 fucking years from announcement until we finally had our hands on it. What the actual fuck. Kawakami best girl. At least it ain't Metroid Prime 4 lololololololololololololololololololololol

I stopped caring about announcements and trailers after FFXIII Versus.

Better for your heart and expectations if you stop watching for announcements.

I wanna say that, but when a game you really want gets hyped up, you'll just lose yourself to it. Everyone has a weakness >_> Super Smash Bros Brawl and Zelda Twilight Princes are good examples

Now think, the most recently teased Atlus game being madd by Persona people (not the whole team, but yeah), Project Re:Fantasy is going on 6 years since the teaser, and we know nothing

We didn't know how good we had it back then :P

I have a weird journey. I played P3P on PSP and Persona 4 on the Vita. Thought they were great. So when P5 basically came out right around the Switch I thought I could probably wait a bit longer to play it portably since it's a long ass game. Then I kept waiting. And waiting.

Then Persona 5 Royal was still a PS4 game.

I finally gave in and bought it at the end of last year and played through it this year. Then finally a Switch version was announced lol.

Didn't matter all that much though since I work from home now. But whenever Persona 6 comes out I'll likely just play that day one.

Not started it yet. I was in the middle of Yakuza 0 and am trying to wrap it up before I move on to something else, which I should have done tonight. In the Finale chapter at least

Yakuza 0 is great. Drink it all in and don't dilute it with other games concurrently. Just a heads up at the ending sequence will probably take you 2 hours

I just wrapped up the Real Estate side quest to get Kiryu's final fighting style and grinding out enough Completion Points to Limit Break it so all that's left is chasing story stuff lol

Damn the knowledge that Persona 6 hasn't even been announced yet hurts. Going to be 40 waiting for the hype cycle
