I never used to but I bought a truck a couple months ago and now I use it every time. This truck has significantly more roll in it before the pawl engages so I do it to be safe.

Well since you're asking:

1. If you parked your car on the street, then having the parking brake engaged will keep it from rolling away or moving in the case that its struck by another car.

2. Using the parking brake can prolong the life of the parking pawl. It can wear out over time since there is a lot of stress that gets put on it when the parking brake is not engaged. This is why the car can sometimes roll back a couple of inches after you park, but pulling the parking brake can alleviate this.

"The simple answer to this question is: Engage your cars parking brake every time you park your car. It doesnt matter if you park your car on an incline, a decline, or the flattest spot on the planet, you should engage the brake every single time."

Rolling away to where? Like, fuck all, my car needs to go in the shop anyways if some fuckhead hit it with enough force to roll it several feet. Is it going to roll into a trash compactor or some shit? How often is my parked car being absolutely slammed into from the front or back while parked, and the ensuing rolling further exacerbates the issue, that this is even remotely something I should be worried about? Once every six or seven lifetimes?

I have also never in my life seen someone need to replace a parking pawl. I'm sure it helps but, seriously, that's what the recommendation is for?

The parking break itself can also become damaged/rusted/faulty from non use.
Using it regularly keeps the parts moving and healthy.

This idea of "never use it except on a hill" is totally outdated and not supported by modern evidence.

Must suck to be you guys. Even if wtf a parking pawl is went bad, my car wouldnt roll because the ground is flat.

It also stands to reason that the strain placed on the parking pawl is directly proportional to the force applied to it. So if you always park on flat ground then it experiences very little wear. That seems to be how it operates according to google.

Meaning that this is about as necessary as usage of the parking brake.

Do the people who not use the parking brake also not lower their gear when driving downhill for an extended period (to stop brakes overheating and giving out), or drive everywhere in first gear if its a manual car?

I'm not lazy and I use it all the time. Literally takes less than a second to pull it.

Hecc a few days ago I was driving a large Mercedes van for work (delivery driver). Flat road, equipped parking and not handbrake for once in accident. And yep... the van started moving slowly... lolz.

BTW.. I do this over 200 times daily for work too.

My car will give a warning chime very quickly if that situation does happen. It's also obvious when it's engaged by how it feels when you give it gas to start moving.

You do realise you can increase the gear in a car and it lets you drive at a higher speed? And the reverse is possible, you can lower the gear and the car will go slower and rev the engine more? If you drive automatic you can still manually lower the gear and this should be done when driving downhill for more than a few seconds because otherwise you ride the brakes all the way down hill, and they overheat and get all fucked up and you cant use the brakes anymore (bad when going downhill) and its expensive to fix if you survive
