This was a game where as a kid I got the strategy for my birthday in April, but I didnt get the game until Christmas; by then, Id had the entire guide memorized cover to cover.

Nope. My ps was in my room, the computer was downstairs. I ran up and down up and down trying to follow a guide but I couldn't make sense of what to do. This is despite playing through the whole game like 8 times.

Yeah, I always made sure I got everything from that area. Used the guide though, for sure.

Yes. Once you realize how the path markers work, it's real easy to guide yourself around.

Alexander was the only source of HOLY damage you could use in that game, right?

The summons being worthless is the worst part of that great game, Knights of the Round is the only exception as only a couple characters can surpass the damage it creates.

yes, but not many enemies weak or use holy element anyway.

The last one I always got. I even got Knights of the Round before Alexander.

Raise your magic and they will hit harder.

Sadly most summons were crap in all the PS1 games. Heck, they were pretty lackluster in the SNES games too. FFX's change to how they work was definitely needed.

Is this the one that's somewhere in that snowy mountain area? My first playthrough I happened upon it because I spent an exceedingly long time wandering around there. Never used it so much though, seemed to suck. In following playthroughs, I never found it worthwhile to try to get it again, just got through that section as quickly as possible.

Absolutely, which is fine. But they were useful. In the earlier games it felt like they were rarely if ever better than pretty much any other option.

Yep but then Christmas 1997 I got the strategy guide with the game.

Yes!
It was my favourite summon, so I used it all the time even if it wasn't very good/I could out damage it easily.

With a guide yes

Yes. IIRC you have to approach the woman in the Great Glacier after touching the hot springs, which reveals her as some sort of ice demon. Probably never would've figured that out without the Player's Guide, especially considering the unseen time limit on the Great Glacier.

He was in 6, 7, 8, and 9. Like most of the traditional summons he had an airship named after him in FF XII. He was probably in XI and some of the later games too, but beyond XII I couldn't be paid to care.
