That's a rumor but hasn't been confirmed. I read that it was just too loud and crowded in the three involved alleys and a person fell which cascaded into the crush. Two of the alleys don't have a wide outlet and the third alley way that does have a wide opening was blocked with cars. Because of the music people couldn't hear the screams to be alerted to stop going that way.

There were over 100,000 people in an area that is less than a whole mile lined with bars.

Death toll is over 140 now, expected to continue to rise. Majority of victims are in their 20s.

Wow, that's even worse than any mass shooting here in the US. Crazy. (not a political take)

for those asking how this happened -
people started pushing because there was a large crowd in a narrow alleyway, and the alleyway was on an incline. people tried to mitigate the situation from getting worse by shouting walk back but because of the music/noise, it was mistaken as telling everyone to move forward. people at the top started pushing even more and everyone started falling from the top and it was a domino effect. the ones at the bottom basically had the weight of 100k+ bodies on top of them... most of the victims are reported to be women right now because of their smaller frames/not being able to withstand the force/seen wearing heels so harder to keep balance (interview from a bystander).

this was a PUBLIC street, and there should have been more security/cops to control the crowd. however, the past years have never had a number this big. it's assumed that because halloween hasnt been celebrated since 2019 due to covid, a lot more people wanted to go out/celebrate. some media channels are wrongly reporting that this was an event/concert/festival. IT WAS NOT A FESTIVAL. people were just on a public street, trying to get to their destinations. it didnt help that this alleyway was right in front of a major subway stop
