well, eventually you get a feel for things like that. stick with it, go is the best game!

what server are you using? I used to play on Fox and OGS. OGS is the best, it just takes too long to find a match. I also prefer competitive games to auto-match, which OGS doesn't do.

For two players who are both inexperienced, how does it play out? Like obviously it's hard to really conceptualize the position, but doesn't the fact that your opponent is bad at that too mean that you play with a smaller strategy set?

You end up playing out weird tangents that would normally get skipped by more experienced players.

But in that is an opportunity because there are times when Ive forced a mistake from a better player by going through some basic exercise.

Japanese chess is called Shogi, it's another game too.

Go is actually more like the "dots" game you might have played on paper where you have a grid of dots and you try to make squares and if you make a square you put your letter in the box.

Both "Chinese" and "Japanese" are correct. Although the game was invented in ancient china, it only survived because it continued to be played in japan and korean for hundred of years. Japan modernized the board to 19x19, for example.

Anyway, I also have a roll-up silicon goban, but you're crazy if you think that's better :P

mine goes "baduk." can't see from the picture, but it's on legs and it's like 6-inches tall so you can sit on the floor and play.

random linguistics:

wieqi = chinese word for go
baduk = korean for go. id argue it's because of the sound the stones make.
igo = another japanese form of "go" showing respect for the game
xiangqi = the game I mentioned, BUT... it's also used in mandarin to mean ANY "chess-like board game." It's similar to a genericized trademark (calling it a "kleenex" even though it's just a tissue, for example)

chess, xiangqi, shogi all come from chaturanga (india, 7th century).

checkers/draughts is even older, at least 3000 years old (played in ancient egypt and sumeria).

weiqi, baduk, go we have evidence of in like 400 bc or so. it could be even older.

it's possible there was some influence between checkers and go.

So I also study middle egyptian for fun and I can read this inscription, sort of (it's easier than u think). It says (from right to left, top to bottom):

(first 2 columns)
An offering which the King gives Nekbet (a goddess)

(third column)
a voice offering (prayer) to Osiris (the avatar of the Creator)

(4th column)
Holy Queen Nefertiti (the picture of her is also a word).

The implication is that you should offer a prayer or voice offering, BUT ALSO that you could play a game of chess as an offering to Nefertiti, or in her honor.

There is a manga about Go, called Hikaru No Go. It had an anime too. I used to read the manga and there is a Go lesson at the end of each chapter. But I still could never understand it anyway

Kageyama got me from 15k to 12k and then 12k to 9k. I haven't played in years though, and I was very much a tesuji player, so I'm probably back down to 15k at best. I loved me a 5-3 opening

It's easy all you gotta do is get possessed by an ancient chinese Go master and you can win all the time if you listen to him.

it's like riding a bike tho; your skill doesnt deteriorate quickly. youre probably still 10-9k after a few hours.

5-3 opening is sus. you gotta learn your AlphaGo joseki though.

Hoshi is fine, same with komoku, but I could not make sansan work when I played.

san san is fine. watch the michael redmond alphago joseki videos.

alphago loves san-san and proves that a double san-san is totally valid opening.

but seriously, what server do you guys play on? OGS is totally dead, I couldn't get a 15 minute game going. Guess ill have to open Fox (it's chinese software I dont want to use it).

Fox seems to have literally gotten shadier... it feels xenophobic but literally every publish piece of software goes through the CCP and this install.exe almost certainly contains spyware.
