Figured this was about the cartoon Avatar.

I honestly hope this is a relative flop. I have never once heard Avatar talked about as anything anyone remotely cares about.

It was a phenomenon based around the 3D technology and an unoffensive story. It is not something that ever needed a ten year plan to create four back to back sequels that will lack the appeal due to declining interest in 3D. I expect the movies will be profitable, but I have a hard time imagine they're going to be anywhere close to the original without a gimmick.

There was no interest in 3D back then either, besides dumb movies like Spy Kids.

Avatar is the thing that made it huge. It was pretty much the first good 3D movie.

Story, while not amazing, was definitely relatable and servicable. Not to mention the atmosphere and lore was there. It was easy to understand and fun to see.

Avatar is not some deep, life changing event. It was just a really fun movie that was easy to get into, and had amazing tech.

I think I'm phrasing my point badly. It's basically that it's just silly Cameron thinks he has some big epic story people want to see when the whole point was the fancy new technology that was extraordinarily impressive. It's not something that has been absorbed into popular culture like Star Wars, but just space FernGully with really great visuals.

IMO, it looks like it'll be a good action/adventure movie.

the only real issue will be that, as part of a series, the momentum was hurt due to there being such a huge gap between the original and this.

but I think that based on this movie's quality, and the sequels coming out relatively soon, it could end up being a memorable franchise.

It's not a guarantee that it'll be the biggest movie evar like the first one, but it won't even come close to flopping. The blandness of the plot will most likely work in its favor - I think the masses crave a flashy, big-budget spectacle that's easy to follow. It's basically an antidote to the MCU, which at this point all but requires a 20-movie backlog of knowledge to get all the references (I still think this a big reason why Venom was such a success; people who didn't get into the MCU at or near the ground floor might very well feel intimidated by it now).

I don't care for the original myself, but it's hard to deny that it has the potential to be a record-breaker, especially in the post-Covid world where people not going to the theaters as often has the effect of drawing in more people for the few big tentpole releases - 'Well hell, if I'm going to get out of the house and see a movie on the big screen, it might as well be the new Avatar flick."

The one thing I do find funny enough to be critical of is that the title of the franchise will probably be almost completely redundant after the first movie - presumably, Jake Sully has completely abandoned his human body for worm food at this point, and I doubt the Na'vi are going to be welcoming a new batch of human wargs into their midst anytime soon. So it's quite possible that Avatar won't have any actual Avatar-ing from this point forward.

Which of course wouldn't bother me in the slightest, if they hadn't snatched the name from the superior Avatar franchise.

The fact that there are teenagers here who don't care because it's so old they weren't even born when it came out is not as much of a savage burn in favor of this film as you think it is. I'll tell you one thing they've all heard of; Star wars.

True facts; it had a massive marketing campaign, fancy cgi with blue people and 3d movies had just come back as a fad so the movie was a perfect storm to make money even though it was just dances with wolves in space and nobody actually remembers much about it now.

I'd say he missed his window but the first one moved a lot of tickets because of marketing so I suppose I shouldn't completely write it off.

Under normal circumstances, I'd worry about a piss break causing me to miss an important plot moment.

Strangely, I don't think I'd have to worry about that with an Avatar sequel.

I refuse to see this unless I can get several people who share my opinions on the first movie, which is that it's a visual and technical masterpiece that has absolutely nothing else of interest going on, to confirm that this actually manages to have something beyond said masterful visuals and technical achievements, then maybe I'll give it a shot. Like, I don't give a shit about motion capture underwater scenes if the story behind it is like watching paint dry, and it being over 3 hours is making it an even harder sell. Watch this 3 hour long movie with boring characters and an uninteresting story but it has flashy visuals and underwater special effects. Does James Cameron think I'm a child who only watches movies because of the pretty effects?

Apparently, the military guy played by Stephen Lang in the first movie will be the overarching antagonist of the series and will reappear in an Avatar body so there's that, but the idea of doing that feels really bizarre considering the sheer hatred he had for the Na'vi, sounds like if a KKK Grand Wizard was reincarnated into the body of a black guy. I feel like they should have cloned him and hand waved aging between movies as "flaws in the cloning process" or whatever.

Eww, seriously? Nothing against Stephen Lang, but his was the most uninspired, one-dimensional character of the original; that's pretty disappointing if the writers looked at his character and said "oh, we simply must contrive some reason to bring this guy back!"

Doubly lol if they're really going for a 'dark avatar' plotline, because people always cite that as their favorite thing about Legend of Korra.

I find it super hilarious that he was so one dimensional that people frequently mistake some Warhammer 40k fanfic writing coming from him because said quote was both better than anything he actually said in the movie and was completely fitting in the context of the plot. I also find it hilarious that James Cameron said that the studio handed him a bunch of ideas and suggestions but threw them all in the trash because they all sounded like shit, and then his big idea for coming up with conflict in the movie is to just revive the bad guy of the first movie and say he'll be the primary antagonist of the series. I swear, the protags better acknowledge how he's permanently in an Avatar body now despite his hatred for the Na'vi.

Honestly, I'm in the same boat as you. I understand the technical marvel that they've achieved with these films, but the story is just too bland to make me actually care enough to watch the sequel. And judging from the trailer, it's lookin like it's gonna be the same in that vein.

Relative flop. Like if this makes $500M-$750M over its lifetime, it'll still be successful and profitable, but it'd prove that the first movie was just an okay film propped up by amazing technology that was never really replicated.
