Yep. My first girlfriend was missing her right leg below the knee from an accident, and one of my best friends is missing his left below the hip from birth.

At one point the two of them were dating to much amusement.

I dont know anyone personally

I know a guy who lost one of his legs and another guy who lost both.

The guy who lost both legs is in his mid 20s and lost them in a car accident. He lived with one of my friends for a bit and I've hung out with him a few times. He's pretty chill and is able to remain positive about his situation and doesn't let it hold him back from living his life. He has 2 artificial legs and can walk.

The guy who lost one leg lost it in a drunk driving motorcycle accident years ago when he was around 20. His girlfriend was on the back of the bike and died. He's like 50 something years old now and one of the most miserable people I've ever met. He still lives with his mom and has done nothing with his life except collect disability and sit in his mom's house drinking beer.

I have a friend who has known him for years and goes to hang with him every now and then out of pity. I've tagged along a couple times.

He was in the military he said something about being exposed to radiation or something. All I know is one of his calves was way bigger than the other one and he didn't do anything about it.
