This. They sent PMs to pretty much everyone who had one. We had a pretty long topic about it at the time.

They also let anyone with a space reset their name if they didn't want the stupid underscore, which is why a couple people went that route instead.

Greetings, long time GameFAQs user!

Due to the merging of three completely different systems over the last twenty-five years (contributors, message boards, and the universal login system), users could have up to three different usernames, each with different rules and standards for how those names could be constructed. However, in the next few months, GameFAQs will be moving to a brand new authentication provider, and in the process of this change we'll be reducing the number of user names associated with an account to one. You are one of the last 4,837 users who have more than one account name, and we'd like to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Although spaces in names will no longer be allowed (as these have caused a myriad of issues for years), we are extending the possible length of a user name to 20 characters indefinitely for legacy users. We understand that for some of you this will be an imposition, but we want to make sure you get to use the user name (or names) you want on the site.

If you have the time, please visit our user name change request form and select a single name you'd like to use across the entire site (including Boards and Contributions). While you will no longer be able to use spaces, you can select any other available name up to 20 characters long as long as it meets our current naming guidelines (consisting of alphanumeric characters, numbers, dashes, and underscores). If you have a more complicated request (including splitting off or anonymizing contributions), please use that same form and provide a detailed explanation of what you want to do. We're more than happy to work with you to get your account set up the way you want, even including allowing you to take over the name of a currently existing but inactive account in some cases.

If you don't request a user name change by Thursday, July 7, we'll automatically set your name to your current site name. Even after this date, you can still request a name change to the one you'd rather have (including the 20 character restriction).

We'd like to thank you for being such a long-time member of GameFAQs, and we're excited to have had you stick around for this long. We'll be making some pretty big changes this year, including at least one big one that you just might actually like, and we hope you'll continue to stick around for the next 27 years.

The trick to Reddit is finding the non-shit subreddits.

Most of the main page ones are hot garbage, but there's plenty of smaller subreddits that have fantastic communities. If you just stick to those and avoid everything else, Reddit's probably one of the best social media sites that currently exist.

Kind of like GameFAQs in that respect. Even when this site was at its best, there were still boards I'd avoid like the plague. Same with 4chan - you can say what you like about /b/ or /pol/ (and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong), but back in the day at least (I haven't been there for a while) boards like /co/ and /tg/ were actually pretty chill, friendly, and interesting. You could have a great experience there no matter how bad some parts of the site might have been.

You can't really judge an entire site solely by the worst boards on it. There's always the chance of finding pearls even in an ocean of shit.

The main problem I have with reddit is that once a community is established, it's incredibly hard to make alternates thrive. The main subreddit for visual novels has a mostly-absent head mod that occasionally comes back and wreaks havoc every few months, and despite best efforts, the next most populated subreddit for visual novels is relatively dead. Because it has a harder to search for name, and the problems with the head mod aren't immediately apparent (because he's usually not there).

Guy mass bans active users for not agreeing with his "Japanese readers are inherently superior" mentality, for disagreeing with him on twitter, for posting once on the alternate subreddit ever, etc. It's just a shitty stalemate where VN discussion remains fragmented because the head mod system is bullshit.

He's probably eventually going to say something ultra racist and get removed by admins (he's already racebaited by accusing others of being racist against him because he's black, but he's posted pics showing he's super pasty white boy before), but that could be years. It just sucks how a community formed during his absence and he comes back and intentionally sows chaos.

I said it somewhere else, but the one thing I miss/would miss if I used reddit is the random nature of boards like this. It's great if you are looking for some specific thing but there is something spontaneous about older style message boards that are dying off. I gather you can mix a bunch of subreddits into your "front page" but that isn't really the same thing, it's just a disjointed collection of various communities. Which reminds me of another thing, you don't really get to see distinct "personalities" form since it's so driven by posting some specific content.

I mean, you can still go to one specific subreddit and you'll find regulars, same as bookmarking a specific forum on here. Just sort by chronological

PotD feels about as active as most of the niche subreddits I subscribe to, tbh
