So a customers order was $3 plus $8 tip but I didnt know they have up to an hour after deliver to redact the tip =/ which of course happened.

Anything else I should know or any other tips you guys have?

This. Different markets seem to favor one vs the other. I typically find that I get less orders with UE, but they pay better. Get to know your area and learn what places to get orders from, and what to avoid. Try to stick to at least $1/mile if you can. Dont be afraid of declining crappy, low paying orders.

Be sure to check high paying orders to see if its a stacked order. Something that seems great might not actually be that great if you divide the total by 2, 3, or more.

Correct. You have up to an hour after delivery to adjust or remove the tip entirely.

Declining even low paying orders makes your acceptance rate go down which means you won't be top dasher, can't dash whenever you want or get the higher paying orders or get high priority.

The $1/mile thing is just silly especially if all the restaurants are close to each other.

I help my sister door dash, we rarely get anything less than $4 but if we do,we take it to keep her acceptance rate around 95% to keep her at top dasher.

It can be frustrating at times especially if the customers are rude but it's not bad.

Hes talking about UE, not DD. There is no Top Dasher program or equivalent with Uber. Thats strictly a DoorDash thing.

And how much per hour do you make with DD as a top dasher? With how many horrible orders I see come across my screen, I cant imagine where you end up by having to take over half of them.

My acceptance rate hovers between 5-10% with DD, but Ive essentially just stopped doing it altogether in my area since the pay is awful, I only can do it late at night, and there are rarely any promos anymore.

Get your acceptance rate up and you'll get better orders, you must have declined a lot of orders to get that low.

It just varies how much we make, we never make the same amount every day because it could be really slow one day or really busy where the orders are coming in one right after the other. Our best was like $250 total between dashing a total of three times between two cities. The smaller city we'd get stacked orders which wasn't a bad thing because usually the customers weren't far from the restaurant or from each other and the restaurants were pretty much clustered together.

I like the days where as soon as we complete one order, we get another one or get stacked orders before we get to the restaurant.

DD and UE both just show you a total which encompasses base pay + tip. DD hides tips in order to try to cut back on cherry picking orders, but theres really no rhyme or reason as to how much they hide or not.

A no-tip DD order will typically be $2.50-$3 base only.

Uber will hide any portion of a tip above $8. Similar to DD, base can be as low as $2.50 an order.

I have only removed a tip once. The driver was a heavy smoker burning a ton of incense in their passenger seat. I assume to try and cover the smell. My cup absolutely reeked of incense and cigarette smoke. I had to throw it out because I couldn't drink it smelling like that. It was overpowering. The tip was taken back and a complaint was made.

Fortunately they kept the bag of food in the back, sealed in a cooler. I could at least eat my fat ass burrito.

But I like the option. I have even bumped the tip up a few times for exceptional service.

Is there some sort of control in place to stop abuse of this feature? Like blocking it on accounts that make a habit of removing or reducing tips after delivery?

Ugh, yeah. Thats a prime example of when it makes perfect sense to reduce the tip. I also cannot stand when its clear the drivers smoke and the bags and such reek of it. Gross.

I am not sure if UE keeps tabs on tip baiters and enforces any repercussions if they catch wind of someone repeatedly doing it. Id assume so, but I have heard of no such live examples of anyone getting banned from ordering due to that.

Yeah its bad. Insulting is one way to put it, but the logical way to put it is it isnt even worth the time and gas to take the order.

Cherry pickers like me will do fine and just weed out the garbage, but then you have Dashers like Mr Karate a few posts above that will take them for the sake of keeping their acceptance rates up.

The companies really are quite scummy.

With that and the $10 tips, youre quite possibly their favorite customer in your area, no doubt!

How do acceptance rates work? Does it like pop up and you are forced to accept or refuse?
Pretty much. The order pops up and you can accept, reject, or simply ignore and just run down the timer, effectively making it just go away and acting similarly to a reject.

What happens if you refuse too much?
DD: As Mr Karate noted above, there is a Top Dasher program whereby DD claims to give you special benefits that non-Top Dashers do not get, but you have to keep your acceptance rate above a certain level. They claim that, as of now anyway, TDs are prioritized for high paying orders, but I really have no basis to quantify what that means dollar-wise, and have also seen TDs post some low dollar stuff still.

I still get decent orders occasionally, and my acceptance hangs around 510%. There are no repercussions for declining 100% of your orders, and you cannot be deactivated (fired)

UE: There is no Top Dasher program like DD, so theres no high paying order priority or anything like that. What I have heard in some areas though is that if you fall below a certain acceptance rate, Uber will start hiding the order and delivery details (name of restaurant and delivery address) in an attempt to get you to accept more. This has not yet happened to me.

Similar to DD, UE cannot fire you for a low or zero acceptance rate.

I would assume since covid happened business in general has gotten better? Now almost every place delivers via apps, where as before it really wasn't that way. So in theory that opens up a lot more potential customers. Maybe, idk. Delivering stuff at your own pace seems like it could be such a cool job if not for the company :(

I started doing it part time in Apr 2020, so during lockdowns. Definitely seemed to me like orders were nonstop and pay was decent. Things maybe slowed a bit when things opened back up. But it also could have been because they signed on a bunch of new drivers. Anyway, I moved at the start of 2021 and noticed a huge decline in order volume and pay from my old town to new. Part of the issue is that I only can really do it late at night since I work full time, and theres just not a ton of places open that late where I live now, or the drive thrus are just awful (upwards of half hour waits for one order) so its just not worth the time.

Delivering stuff at your own pace seems like it could be such a cool job if not for the company :(
Very much so. My wife and other folks think Im nuts for doing it, but as a side gig I actually quite enjoy it. There are no bosses, you can deliver - or not - at your choosing, and the level of commitment and stress is super low. Once youve delivered, thats it. Just stop and walk away for the day if you want to, no pressure. Compare that to my full time gig where youre pretty much on 24/7 and theres not even really a break when you take PTO.

Its also nice that you can turn on the apps anywhere you are across the country. Ive been on vacation and done some deliveries just to pass the time and scope out the area while making a few bucks.

Multi-apping also can be fun, and almost like a game to see how much you can maximize your earnings. Its not for everyone, and you can definitely get in trouble if you dont know what youre doing, but if the stars align sometimes you can get lucky. I once had a double stack on both DD and UE, so 4 total orders, all from the same restaurant and delivered to the same general area and direction. Made about $60 for an hours worth of work.

It probably depends on how they do straws and utensils. Some places pack them in the bag. But some places has stations. Like how if you have a drink fountain, straws are usually there. Or how napkins, straws, and utensils are at a station at Chipotle

Restaurants fault. They really should be packing that in the bags along with the food. No driver I know of, myself included, would assume thats on us to do. We would assume its in the bag or whatever, and we are not allowed to break any seals or open bags.

I averaged $20-30/hr dual apping in my old area, $15-25 where I live now. If I only did one app or the other, figure the net pay would only be part of that.

If youre looking for part time gig work, couldnt hurt to try signing up for both to see if availability is in your area. And might as well try Grubhub while youre at it.

Yeah, that is very doable. Every area is different, and larger cities like around Chicago and NY tend to be higher paying, but 10-15 hrs a week could get you that.

I try to do this as well. Not just for driver convenience but also much more likely to get the food hot.

I actively avoid anything greater than 5 miles and I try to leave a 10-15% tip. Bigger tips on smaller orders like 20% or do.

I've only rescinded the tip twice. Both cases I got someone else's order.

Be an over the road driver. Drive outside New York.

My father is an trucker and in the late 80s early 90s the rule at his company was "in nyc don't stop at night". These days he just won't go there at all as an owner operator. Now, I figure that's as much about the toll roads as anything else

You only need a 70% acceptance rate at the end of the month to retain top dasher. Its also a rolling rate based on your last 100 total dashes. Meaning, early month you can say no to everything and still keep top dasher since the last week you can just accept 70% of orders.
