I'm so dang tired of not playing dnd! Scheduling is the hardest part so if we stick to people who routinely have weekends free the chance of success might be higher?

I could DM. I've done it a few times so am by no means seasoned but I think it could be a fun time! I have The Lost Mine of Phandelver module and am familiar with it so if I were to DM that'd be the adventure. It's pretty basic and beginner friendly, which is what the campaign would be. The general tone I would strive for is laid back but also firm on rules. They are there for a reason and help facilitate the fun! But rule of cool is also a thing! And is very much at the DM's discretion.

Ideal party size would be 4-6. No more than 6, sorry. And I'd say no fewer than 3. R rating for language and violence, potentially.

Welcome to new or grizzled players. If someone else feels strong about being DM that's fine with me.

No class or race restrictions (except they have to be official content) but the world may react appropriately to a particularly exotic race.

I'm also flexible with character creation in that I'm a fan of 4d6 drop the lowest reroll 1s. Good stats never hurt anybody. Also open to a free feat at level 1, because fun.

I don't expect this topic to go anywhere but I've got to try ._.

EDIT: I think I do have the PHB.

I don't have anything for dnd beyond. I've only used Roll20 in the past. So that's how'd we play if I DM.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Like the class/character stuff? To make it more automated or whatever? I don't mind people just using their own dice and stuff like that. But for ease of use I guess it would be good.

I think the best thing about 5E is that it's fairly simple and easy to get into imo. Haven't played previous editions but everything I hear tells me it's simpler.

If I DM I am of course ready to help anyone with making their characters if they need it.

I've heard a lot of good things about 3. Don't know if I would be interested in anything earlier than that. I think the system in KOTOR is a modified version of 3E and I adore Knights of the Old Republic, so I could try to get into that if necessary.

Don't bother with 3. Just do 3.5/Pathfinder. 3 was fine when it came out but there really isn't a point in playing it anymore if you don't explicitly have nostalgia for it.

Kind of, yeah. It's mostly just small rules changes here and there but ends up amounting to a really enormous switch-up. Importantly these changes means that all of the content from each don't slot into each other and because 3.5 is the one that was "the current one" for so long that means that the overwhelmjngly massive amount of the content is for it and would require that you do a ton of legwork to get all of the official stuff from the era compatible (let alone the billions of homebrew creations for 3.5).

Pathfinder versus 3.5, however, is a bit more up in the air. Yeah Pathfinder is "updated 3.5" but there is enough reason to stick to 3.5 that you can go that route if you want to. Where all changes 3.0->3.5 are positive (if you are fine with cheeky OP nonsense not being as available) there are some from 3.5->Pathfinder that can at least be somewhat chalked up to personal preferences.

Ah I see. I'm not sure I'd like it much, then, because I've tried to play a bit of Pathfinder Kingmaker the video game and it's too crunchy for me. Not past the point of understanding, but past the point of caring. Just seems a tad tedious to me, unless everyone is 100% on top of their shit and knows how to play the game. Which seems like a rare party.

I did not get into it myself until the last few years when I stumbled across Critical Role. Gotta start somewhere! A fun place to start would be to look over races and classes and see what sparks your imagination. DnDbeyond.com is a good place to experiment with characters.

I assume you understand the basic idea of like rolling dice and RPGs lol

Also if not that's okay too!

Frankly Kingmaker is more annoying than normal on that front. Yeah it's just the base game and whatnot, but when you are actually playing the game it's a load easier to actually play due to mental shortcuts. It's one of those things that just doesn't come out well there at all. In addition it "grows" as you get more in-depth but with the video game it is expected that everything always be present. Then you have the fact DM descretion is big in the real game versus it not being possible to do in a video game. Things like house rules, such as critical fumbles, just can't exist in a video game like they can in P&P.

Basically as someone who as played a *lot* of Pathfinder I am 100% with you on your Kingmaker comments. Pathfinder the actual game is a far easier and more approachable game than that. Trust me there.

I probably won't play, but I can content share a few source books on dndbeyond if you want. Just need to set up a campaign and send me the join link either here or on AssultTank and I'll pop a dummy character in and share my stuff.

I already have a Saturday game I play in and a Monday game I DM so... lol

Also, players can use the beyond20 plug in to send rolls from dndbeyond to roll20

i've only played one campaign as a life cleric. would be fun to have something more social than just video games

i have two ideas for characters. one is an aarakocra swashbuckler, who would get all them sneak attacks and dash away like a coward thanks to 100 ft fly speed (50 ft natural + bonus action dash + fancy footwork). the other character is a warforged eldritch knight, who was a wizard but only able to partially transfer his soul to an empty warforged so doesn't remember his past

Don't worry about a "best class" as it comes and goes based entirely on how much effort you put in. Like, if I wanted to 100% power game I could end up with a level 1 character with powers not far off of a god (though more in 3E than 5... haven't really played 5E) without leaving the official stuffs. However, most of the fun comes from doing random crap a lot more than it is about actually being powerful (and most of the time I make a "powerful" character it's because the goofy nonsense just plays into that a bit too well). Paladin is great and would absolutely be good enough if you wanted to play one.

You can always go play by post if timing is a big issue. Sure games will be slower, but at least you are more likely to have a steady pace. I for one prefer the play by post format.

I think the first thing would be to have everyone who is interested send me (the DM, unless anyone else wants volunteer) a PM so I can get an exact number, then we can work out exact scheduling. I guess first come first serve. I think I want to be firm on a maximum of 6 players. And I do want to have a session zero where we go over the basics of the game and what our expectations are for the game. Also figure out things like party dynamics and backstory sort of stuff.

And while this will be over roll20, camera is of course optional.

If people were available for both days and wanted to play both days, I could be down for that.
