Better for who? The majority of players enjoy the games as they are and much of what would make them 'better' to the players that do complain about it would make it worse for the casual players that form the bulk of the community.

I would say innovating on a battle system that's remained almost the exact same since 1996 would be a good start, and introducing gimmick fights isn't the way to do it.

more post game content, harder (optional) difficulty (whether it's post game battle tower/subway/etc. or story mode is up for debate), having the option to catch ALL current available pokemon in-game (this excludes events/etc.)

not creating gimmicks and then abandoning them (i miss mega evolutions)

If they spent more time making them in general. They feel more like mobile game levels of quality over AAA levels of quality. Not bad, but not enough to keep me around after 20 years.

They could also just make them harder and I would be happy, or give it a hard mode. I feel like I don't actually play the game until hour 40.

Dump the 4 move system. Or at least have pokemon have their complete pool of moves at all time and you can swap which moves they battle with at anytime outside of battle. The move relearning and tutoring is a huge pain in the ass.

The option to avoid the meaningless starting miniquest where you get your Pokedex and also the option to choose just about any Pokemon as your starter on replays (or give you a random), etc. And to speed things up. And to skip cutscenes, etc.

Other than that, the games are mostly fine.

A decent story. There really isn't a good reason to not have a better writing in these games.

More post-game content even as updates if they have to. Also just more side content in general. Pokestar Studios, Pokemon Musicals, Pokemon Contests, The video editing thing in XY. I love little distractions like that. That's why I like the Yakuza series so much.

Stop pandering to just Gen 1 nostalgia. I have nostalgia for all the other gens as well. Put some more throwbacks to them please. Like I liked seeing Grimsley in SM. I liked seeing Cynthia in BW. The PWT in BW2 was really despite it just being battles against the old Gym Leaders and E4 members.

This is just not true, they have added in abilities, held items, double battles, weather, terrain, and had the physical/special split, all of which changed it quite a bit from gen 1

Honestly I won't even lie, make a 16 bit pixel based Pokemon game that blends realism into the backgrounds and environments (sort of like Octopath Traveller).

Feature only Pokemon from the first 3 or 4 gens. Have it take place in Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn, except 25 years after the events of those games. You have to travel between regions and deal with shit being stirred up by Team Rocket.

You'll end up with 24 badges before you battle the Elite Eight (oh fuck dude). The levels would naturally progress through the game, so the Elite Eight would have Pokemon in their level 90s.

The Champion would be someone totally unexpected but still nostalgia based, like a grown up Youngster Joey, with a level 100 Raticate as well as a fully balanced team of high 90s Pokemon, maybe even something nuts like a level 99 Mewtwo or something.

Basically just make something that itches the nostalgia of the original fans while acknowledging that they aren't kids anymore. Actual kids would love this as well.

Yeah, they've made plenty of changes to the battle system throughout the years. The core is still the same, certainly, but this isn't Final Fantasy. There's no reason to expect the battle system to fundamentally change with each new game.

Rework the confusion status ailment.

It could add recoil to attacks, make the pokemon sometimes use the wrong move, target incorrectly in doubles sometimes. Get creative with it.

Give us back the optional crap. Like turning off Exp. Share/All.

Do something similar to the memory card easter eggs so that people who know how to play the game can just fast forward through the "tutorial" portion of the game. Heck, you can have the professor of the game be like "I sense a champion's aura from you... maybe you were the ____'s champion in a past life!" sort of schtick.

A lot of people have mentioned some good stuff. I think they could also add:
NG+
Specific challenges with various restrictions/goals
Have the badges actually do something? Like you can wear one of them and it gives you some sort of bonus to the related type? I dunno...
They need to balance the types in the series. I keep seeing people saying this is a huge problem and though I don't play the games myself I also got that impression. It sounds like Fairy type is way too good atm.

As far as stories go, I've always thought it was weird that every single main-line game has the same exact premise. You're a trainer, go earn badges. Like... the series has so many characters in so many jobs; why not do a game where your goal is not to be a trainer, but to be like... a conservationist? You can still do the gyms and such, why not? but... why does that have to be the foundation of each game every time? I mean, I remember learning about pokemon for the very first time and being like "training seems like the most boring thing to do in that setting."

That's the best part of the Special manga imo. Every main character has a different goal and strengths, and it isn't always to beat gyms or become the champion. Like Ruby's all about Pokemon Contests.
