In actual global humanitarian aid and relief work, we dont use the term at all. When I was in the Peace Corps, we used the term developing country not third world country (exactly for the reason in your OP), but there is even a growing movement to change the term developing country in favor of something that acknowledges the history of colonialism and disenfranchisement in most developing countries. I think the two terms I heard most were pillaged countries and disenfranchised countries, with the latter obviously being the better option of the two as it encompasses more means of disenfranchisement, though I dont personally use either term as I think developing country is much more widely understood (even by those still stuck on third world country) in everyday language. ... FatalAccident posted... TC just found out the origin of the term 3rd world country and thought hed try flexing his new knowledge lmao I actually found the opposite. I read that it is an offensive and derogatory term. Like there is an "orientalist" vibe or tend toward exoticism that makes those places an other. I guess I mean that it has colonial bias. That said, I hear it used by laypeople all the time in general speech. --- "Oh, you think lag is your ally. You merely adopted lag. I was born in it, molded by it.
