Yeah I would definitely go against one episode "character dressed up as Santa" Santa's

What I'm thinking the official rule is going to be

1. Characters that are in canon Santa or a Santa equivalent
2. Characters who are primarily recognized in their source material for acting as a Santa stand-in in media where no other canon Santa is presented

...I mean, given he's like a one off mention of a non-Santa character that never even appears onscreen, I'd probably lean against it

Here's what I'd suggest

• Allow characters who take on the mantle of Santa with the whole delivering presents to the world thing and piloting a sleigh and whatnot (or a thematic reversal of that such as the Grinch), be it in one off form or whatever
• Allow characters who dress as Santa as a defining characteristic of the role (like Bad Santa)
• Allow actual Santas, obviously

I feel like this kicks out all minor Santa appearances like "Cartman Dressing as Santa", while still allows one offs that are very clearly "actually Santa" (even if temporarily) as well as quintessential mall Santa types.

To me Santa in The Grinch being allowed while The Grinch himself, who very clearly IS Santa for a large part of the story and is the memorable character, is sad and a butchery of what the field should be, even if I agree like random sitcom characters dressing as Santa one time in the mall shouldn't be considered a Santa.

This also allows Koopa Klaus, who is a way more lovable character than the actual Santa he dethrones from that same Super Mario Bros Super Show episode.

I don't think anyone's arguing that "Santa from The Grinch" should be allowed in. Such a character doesn't even exist; it's implied that there is a Santa, but we never actually see him during the story. None of this has anything to do with whether the Grinch is himself Santa in some way (rather than just wearing a Santa disguise).

I think the point is that "Santa in disguise" to me should be considered a Santa proxy if they're doing Santaish stuff beyond just dressing up as them.

Like to me
Actual Santa by design is good (most Santas are here)
Mall type Santa by design is good (Bad Santa and others are here)
One Off Actual Santa is good (imo Grinch fits here in a way-- also Koopa Klaus but I'm totally doing this for Grinch honest)
One Off Mall type Santa is bad (this is where your "Cartman in a Santa suit" is)

I think if you axe the types that aren't the literal Santa but are basically doing Santa stuff in their story you remove a lot of the field that people would actually vote for.

Yeah, santa in the grinch isn't an actual character

But the Grinch is not santa

It's not about whether he's Santa it's about whether he's performing the role of mystic type Santa and whether that's a defining part of his character

If you limit to actual Santas the field becomes p boring imo

The Santa Clause

Tim Allen's character in the movie is clearly not Santa and only acts as a Santa Proxy for one season due to injuring the real Santa.

Is he allowed or not? To me he should obviously be allowed but by the current definition he wouldn't and you'd have to nominate the real Santa from that movie.

But hypothetically assume he didn't. Is he disqualified? I feel like he should never be considered for disqualification no matter how long his Santa tenure because he is very clearly acting as Santa Claus even if he isn't the Santa Claus.

He would still count since he was still effectively the real Santa Claus for a time, as the position constantly shifts anyway.

I think he should I'm just not sure he does by the letter of the law of the proposed rules. Grinch serving as a temporary 'real' Santa (even if it is just returning stuff he himself stole) doesn't seem that different to me.

See, the difference is that you're putting "real" in quotes to describe the Grinch. He's not the actual official Santa in any sense. Even mall Santas can say "being Santa" is their job, but can the Grinch?

The quotes are more to indicate he's bad at it it doesn't mean he's not effectively performing the role. That's literally the point of the story
