Speaking of which, as was suggested in the original idea topic, with the Christmas season coming up (and the word play being too fun to ignore) the next contest is Save My Santa [sms]! A nomination topic should pop up in the next day or two so get ideas ready if you want to nominate!

Now with that, I'll pose one more question to everyone regarding eligibility, specifically whether you think we should include characters that, while not technically Santa, fulfill the role of Santa in some way in their own source material. Willie Stokes (Bad Santa) and The Grinch both act as Santa in their own way. Jack Skellington does too, despite there being an actual Sandy Claws in that movie. So let me know your thoughts on where you stand!

The good news is Robot Devil got his deserved placement. The bad news is that was because you HEATHENS couldn't support the actual best devil, Black Phillip. No one wants to live deliciously these days.

you can name like any media ever and there's decent chance a Santa appears in it

Also if Mr. Satan doesn't count neither would Project Satan, imho.

My worry is if you do every media just because people do it for the media and not the character itself

Most of the characters I can think of just dressed up as Santa once

so that's kinda why I asked that. I'd prefer to avoid "character that just wears a Santa outfit one time" but in cases where acting like Santa is a significant part of the character (like in The Grinch and Bad Santa) I think I'm more inclined to accept it

I wouldst have liked to live deliciously but I missed too many rounds so we couldn't have nice things. My biggest regret was Maou Sadao though. I went to a movie that night and it was over by the time we got back. Best Satan should've been guaranteed a top ten placement AT WORST.

Congrats! Good winner for a good final, considering the number of lame Satans that made it into the contest it could've ended a lot worse.

If I ever ran a Save My I always thought I'd do weighted finals votes. Same 1 vote in finals like now, but the vote value is 1 + every round you made a legal save in the contest. So someone who saved in each of the 43 days in this contest, their final vote would be worth 44; somebody popping in to the finals to save for the first time is only worth 1. If you missed some rounds, you miss out on hitting that "max" finals vote, so every day/continuous participation matters.

Upside is it rewards participation throughout, so a full-contest saver isn't worth the same as a finals pop-in which never feels fair to me. Downside is you need to track daily participation, though that can be a by-product of tracking saves for round updates so not too much additional effort? It would also mean anyone uniquely popping in for the finals is so fractional, their votes wouldn't matter unless it was a real nailbiter, which I guess is a bad thing. The "max" vote could be capped at some number lower than the number of the days in the contest in that case, I guess.

Probably more downsides I'm not considering, but just wanted to mention that anyhow!

The contest was a ton of fun - always love niche contests like this. Gives me old, almost KotM-esque vibes. I think maybe changing the saves needed needs to be fine tuned a bit but otherwise things were very smooth.

Maybe there needs to be a checklist for what qualifies as a Santa? And if a character hits like 2 out of 4 or whatever they're in. That might keep certain characters out. Maybe like (1) has the look, (2) delivers presents, (3) has reindeer / other animal companion, (4) has some sort of magic ability. Or just let them all in 'cause who cares!

Krampus is absolutely not Santa and I wouldn't think characters like that would qualify.

But I would main him if he somehow makes the contest.

I'm not a fan of expanding the definition of what qualifies as a Santa as proposed by the TC and some others. I think there are enough different true Santas out there to fill 50 spots. but majority rules.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't go with like Krampus because that's such a distinctly different character

really my main reason for expanding is for stuff like Bad Santa, where even if I'm not personally gonna be voting for him, Billy Bob Thornton's character appears on like every list of Santa portrayals out there. There's definitely enough Santas that I'd want to lean against stuff that's obviously not Santa

then again there's also not a lot of ways to include something like that over something that is definitively a bad fit so I'm still on the fence

thinking it'll stick to just actual Santas rather than including people just dressed as Santa (but this will also of course include characters that are clearly meant to be Santa without the actual name (like The Hogfather mentioned earlier). Some might just be handled on a case-by-case basis again.

Still leaning toward accepting The Grinch since I assume that'll be a big nomination and does all the job of a Santa Claus (and it's not like there's another Santa fulfilling that role)

What? The Grinch not only isn't doing Santa stuff for most of the story, he's literally doing the exact opposite. He is like the least Santa-ish character.

I think the dividing line is if the character is the in universe santa claus. Someone putting on a santa suit does not make them eligible

The divider line should be them playing as Santa Claus (or dressing as Santa Claus) for the majority of the time in the episode or movie or story and when in doubt allow

I just think we have a ton of real in universe santas that we don't really need people who just dress up as santa for an episode or part of a movie.

Eric cartman shouldn't be in this contest because he wore a santa suit in one episode of south park

Whats the verdict on characters who are only known for being a Mall Santa? Such as the mall Santa from A Christmas Story.

unless in that episode he was actually portraying the real Santa in a satire-type episode or otherwise (ned flanders as satan is an example of this). If it was just Eric putting on a Santa suit acting like Santa for an episode while keeping his identity as eric, then I'd agree not to include him.

But maybe the funniest part about all this is how much this board cares about the particularities of a save my santa contest, lol.
