There is no Dark Ages. It was a term used by people during the Renaissance and Enlightenment to fluff their own egos about how educated and sophisticated they were.

Huh. I had always been told it was a period of time that had no significant advancement in technologies.

Anyways the electric age? Silicone age?

I had heard it was cause alot of the history wasn't written down, or the texts were lost.
Dark in the "we don't really know what happened here" sense
But i would'nt be surprised if that's inaccurate

That does sound more fitting than what I said. Most recorded history was probably the scarce journal/diary.

Depends on how far you go into the future.

By 3000, I wouldnt be surprised if this was the Middle Ages and the previous Middle Ages was given a different name.

By 5000, this would be late ancient history.

By 10,000, this would just be borderline prehistory.

the dark ages were absolutely real: technology, life expectancy, quality of life for millions was thrown back 1000 years.

critics of the term "dark ages" are usually devoutly religious and want to make it seem like flying buttresses are as useful to society as knowing brain surgery and how to treat asthma.

the truth is absolutely that Christianity wrecked the entire continent.

there are, of course, still advances going on in India, syria, china, etc. at the time, but that doesn't change the fact that Europe was a pile of mud for almost 1300 years with the main advances being very tall ceilings and metal suits.

sorry but this is wrong. the term "dark ages" refers to a lack of primary sources from the time period; not to any sort of decline

Sure, but the lack of primary sources was the result of a decline.

There was no corresponding Byzantine or Arabic or Indian or Chinese dark age during this same time period, as those societies didn't utterly collapse remotely to the same degree as Western Europe.

no, the church did absolutely jack shit aside from literally burning people alive, etc.

the knowledge we do have was preserved by arabian scholars, translated to latin, and the re-imported back to europe.

the dark ages were absolutely real and ridiculous amounts of knowledge as well as specific technologies were lost. the knowledge, for example, of how to read 3000 years of egyptian, was simply lost--exterminated by Christianity. again, the WORLD wasn't in a dark age, but most of europe and north africa certainly was.

I find a tad odd that at rehab I was one of the few who didn't seem bothered by the lack of a smart phone. I'd say it's cause I'm stuck 12 hours a day without any technology at work but I also recall being the only one not getting all pissy when we lost power for a week during Florence. And I wad the only one who didnt have a cell phone (everyone else was able to charge theirs using a vehicle)

I kinda get my age group and lower. But seeing people old enough to be my parents act like they can't function without it is a tad amusing

I don't think it's quite that simple.
The priests and monks were the scholars and philosophers of the time.
Literacy went down mainly cause the counquering Goths, Anglo-Saxons and Franks etc didn't really write, and this began to turn when they converted, at which point we get things like the Carolingian Renaissance.
There were like 2-3 "mini-renaissances" before the big one

And it seems to me like the "punish the heretic, he's trying to learn" was more prevalent later when the churches power was under threath during the Reformation and subsequent CounterReformation
