I don't know anything about the Civil War... but it's interesting to me

In the case of Virginia, they broke away and created their own state, West Virginia.

Name creativity was in short supply back then.

Most stayed where they where iirc. Even heard lee didnt like fighting against the union but liked the idea of fighting friends and family less. Im sure some skipped town and went up north though.

My great great whatever grandfather lived in the South and was an officer in the Union army. His family never left the area during or after the war.

They either went north to join the army or just rode it out in place, by and large. It got nastiest along the Mason-Dixon line between the north and south where the populace had evenly split opinions and control of the state was in question.

The Revolutionary War was probably more interesting from that angle, though. There were English 'loyalists' everywhere, no formal armies on the continent when the conflict started, and volunteer militias popped up everywhere on both sides to do a significant percentage of the fighting.

idk why I recently have been liking the American Civil War... it's just such an interesting piece of history and has the benefit of being well documented.

I grew up around a bunch of battlefields. I didn't realize how spoiled in history I was as a youth. Wish I had spent more times looking through fields for artifacts and stuff before they all got bought up.

so anyone that wanted to join was on their side already

Or they just stayed behind and helped in other ways. I've said before the underground rail road would have never worked had there not been southerners who actually gave a fuck about the slaves.
