I remember being a kid and it felt like the entire world was crumbling in 2008.

My parents almost lost the house to foreclosure due to losing their jobs and being unable to pay the rent. They had to borrow money from other family to just narrowly avoid that.

I couldnt pay for school lunch anymore. My family made too much money to qualify for free or reduced price lunch so I had to pack peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with off brand crusty bread and PB&J that tasted horrible.

At the time, I had a flip cell phone and one day I came home from school to it saying no service available and my parents said that they had to cut the cellphones because they couldnt afford it.

Things eventually got a little bit better over the years but not by much.

It still felt like the world never really went back to how it used to be before 2007.

When I became an adult I started working at a car dealership (2016) and they all talked about how the company used to have 401k matching and good insurance prior to 2008 but even 8-9 years later those benefits never returned.

2008 ruined everything.

I could go into a big rant about what happened, who did it, and why, but all that does is cause Doom_Art to have to do another intervention.

The short version is: the housing crisis caused by a policy of "private profits / public losses" did it.

You do realize foreclosure happens when they default on a mortgage, not a rental? Thats called an eviction.

My parents werent renting.

Every time one of these recessions happens it becomes an excuse to cut benefits, fire people and hire new talent at bottom wages. Things is that went the economy gets better, mainly the upper management sees that and we get some lame party thanking us for our performance helping the company achieve record numbers.

Yeah we've been trying to dig out of the mess of the Iraq war ever since we went in.

i dunno, things didn't really change much for my family in 2008 because we were already poor lol, my parents have never owned a home and are never likely to, and making "too much money" has never been a problem for us

Not for the "entire world". But then, when people say "the world", they usually mean "that little corner of it where I live".

public trust in the financial system and the government's capacity to honestly regulate it eroded

also those negative real interest rates have done a number on society; thankfully a reversal is happening, but the macroeconomic fallout will be catastrophic

the world's gone to shit after 2015-16.

the time around Pokmon Go launched was the closest we have to world peace in decades, but then quickly going downhill.

How did you not qualify for free lunch if neither of your parents had a job? I got free lunch when I was a kid because we were poor as fuck. Was a regular occurrence to come home to no electricity because the bills werent paid.

I never realized we were poor till I got old though. I thought I was cooler than everybody else because I got free lunch

I still consider myself luckier than 90% of other kids in the world. I rarely thought I didnt have enough.

Republicans really went over the edge after Obama was elected and haven't even attempted to climb back up.

And of course, it only got worse once Trump took control of the party.

9/11 marked a turning point. The empire has been clearly crumbling ever since.
