...I like how they're crazy enough that this could really happen and no one would doubt it (just saw this recommended, and wanted an excuse to post it):

I've beaten each one except the Kiwamis (I beat the originals, though) and Y6.

the series just isn't for me, even though I liked the first two games on the PS2.

I just started playing the one that was last month's PS+ Free game.

I'm 5-6 chapters in.

Is the whole game this dialogue/cutscene driven?

I'm not sure which one that is - does it have free-action combat or is it turn-based?

whichever the case, each game in the series is really cutscene and dialogue driven.

they have a lot of side-content, though, which can be fun and/or hilarious.

Has been turned based so far.

It's whichever one has the tagline "Like a Dragon"

same reason i can't get into it.

i don't really mind long cutscenes and dialogue but having them written with extreme japanese melodrama in mind is just too much for me.

I like how unapologetically Japanese these games are. Like there are tons of games that are made in Japan and have distinctly Japanese stuff in them, but the Yakuza series feels like a genuine and unfiltered window into the culture itself and I really appreciate that. I feel like I have a much better understanding of Japan just by having played them.

I watched that whole thing to hope at the end the enemy lost all their health and fell over and this video couldn't deliver on that.

In some ways yes, but in a lot of ways the games are romanticized and not remotely accurate to real life.

But I do agree that you feel like you understand Japanese culture better lol.

I love Yakuza but some of the lesser entries make it really hard for me to recomend jumping into it. In games like Yakuza 5 there are story aspects that are such a slog and the cutscenes keep going for what feels like almost an hour with pointless melodramatic dialog. Your eyes *will* glaze over several times playing the series.

However the latest entry, Like a Dragon was almost flawless and seemed they took some story criticisms to heart.
