Embracer Group has announced that Borderlands developer Gearbox now owns the Risk of Rain franchise.
After the quarter, Gearbox acquired the Risk of Rain IP along with all released games in the commercially successful video game franchise from Hopoo Games, Embracer Group explains in its second-quarter interim report.
Risk of Rain now joins Gearboxs portfolio of owned games that includes acclaimed franchises such as Borderlands, Brothers in Arms, Homeworld, and more.

Wow, they didn't even buy Hopoo, they just bought the IP outright. Kind of surprising, Hopoo seemed ready to support the game further but they just kinda dropped it out of nowhere didn't they?

Also yeah, get ready for Gearbox to make RoR3 with shitty meme humor and unlikable characters, maybe if it sells more than 2 copies they'll make a "Tales from Petrochor V" to go along with it.

I sometimes wonder where Borderlands went wrong.

I really liked the first 1, and the 2nd was was very decent even though it had too much childish humour in it (like a bad Paul Fieg movie)

I mean, whatever the future of the series, both current games are still well worth playing. This just means there isn't a lot of hope for future games.

Games are an investment to me. I have to play games with a future.

That... makes no sense. Nothing has a guaranteed future and there's zero reason to let a hypothetical future lack of good games in the same series impair your enjoyment of good games that are very real in the present.

Honestly there's some truth in that.
I have been abused by one too many game developers in my time.

You should look at Zeus' progress in Runescape over 20 years. He has done almost everything in the game (both versions) and it's pretty crazy.

That's nice, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with what I said.

I mean even if they don't want to keep making RoR stuff, that's fine, but to randomly announce you sold the IP of the games that put you on the radar so to speak seems a bit strange.

There's also the fact Gearbox has been known to butcher the franchises they get, like DNF. And don't forget about all the controversy with Aliens Colonial Marines, they literally funneled people off from that to prioritize Borderlands while collecting full payment as if they were still working on it, and the false footage of Colonial Marines.

Gearbox is a terrible company, they will assuredly destroy the franchise, I expect a Claptrap DLC for RoR2 in the next year or RoR3 with Claptrap and all characters are voiced with obnoxious personalities.

It was like 60% their fault. Yes, the version that 3D Realms was working on at the time was pretty crappy but:

1) Gearbox forced them to release that version and
2) Gave them a year to do it with no increase in staff, forcing them into a ridiculous crunch.

Want proof of how good it could have been had Gearbox given them more time/resources? Look at the DLC for DNF, which is like 10X better then the base campaign.

the only game that's taken longer then duke forever is beyond good and evil 2

yeah gearbox forced them to release, but at that point it had still been in "development" for years

There have been essays written on the development cycle for Duke Nukem Forever, but the point is the version that was released was like the 5th version of the game, and it had only been in development for a year before Gearbox got their hands on it. For reference, the version that got leaked in May was like the 2nd or 3rd version (depending on if the 2D version they originally planned in 97 actually got any development devoted to it).

The better thing to do would have been to cancel the game and start with a new idea, or just give the team the extra year or two to tighten up the game a bit. I mean, who, in 2011, was clamoring to get a Duke Nukem Forever game and couldn't wait any longer?
