It doesn't do anything better than other Tales games have in the past and doesn't really push the envelope in any meaningful way. The combat is all right but nothing special when talking about Tales games. The story falls off a cliff after the first arc and quickly becomes monotonous and honestly a pretty big waste of time, with most of the first 30~ hours of the game being varying degrees of "We need to defeat the Four Really Mean Dudes" without much else going on. Then the last 10 hours of story goes so batshit stupid that you'll either laugh at it or just groan because it feels like the writers forgot to add a real story until the last chunk and then just awkwardly jammed an incomprehensible mess into the last bit of the game. The characters largely suck, with most of the main cast either being annoying, boring, poorly-developed, or some combination of those. Character arcs will come out of nowhere and feel comically out-of-place, with a special shoutout to (actual spoilers) when this evil chick murders a whole stadium full of people, and then one of the main party members tries to attack her but is stopped by another party member because of a hamfisted "Revenge is wrong!" theme that comes out of nowhere and feels completely inappropriate given what just happened in the game. TLDR: Gameplay good but not THAT good. Writing is awful. I'm a long-time Tales fan who kind of hated the entire experience as a whole because the writing was just that bad. Most Tales games are pretty ho-hum JRPGs in the writing department, but they have likable and interesting characters and they have a fun time with their tropiness, but Arise was just a mess. It REALLY is that linear with no surprises along the way and when they do appear theyre non sensical and you dont really care. Battle system is pretty fun, although the over reliance on team artes was annoying at times. Also boss battles are actually the weaskest point of the game. I think I'd even get sick of the game after awhile and then all I read about is how the back end of the game is really bad. I thought Tales of Beseria was great and I completed that game and really have no major complaints (outside of the tedium of how equipment was handled which I suppose I could have tried to just ignore it more but holy crap there is sooo much trash) tbh I think realized that I'm not really much of a Tales fan as I looked into other games in the series but other than Phantasia, Abyss and Vesperia (to a point) they all seem like wastes of time and overall not that interesting :/ guess the series was never really meant for me yet somehow Tales of Berseria just really nailed it. --- "A lesser talent couldn't have pulled it off.
