Board 8 > Have you ever beated a video game in full at an anime convention?

Asking because I was just at a con this past weekend and I spent like 7 hours of my time (I got to the con two hours in and had to leave with a couple hours to go) playing the first Sly Cooper game, which I'd never played before, and I got 68% completion (halfway through world 4). This was over multiple visits to the same PS2 with the applicable memory card. I went ahead and watched the rest on YouTube.

To note: If you played a game for one extended sitting that lasted 8 hours or more, vote for the first option. My intent with these is to distinguish those who beated short games from those who beated long ones, and I thought about 8ish hours would be the happy medium since conventions typically last about 50, and most people go sleep for a few hours each night. I may be off there but I don't know how anyone else manages their time at a con >_>

Yes, I beat several of the streetpass games at Anime Central. It was a lot of fun!

i've only been to like two anime cons in my life and i was only able to be there for like 2 hours both times, they didn't have like game booths or anything there either iirc

they're the only times i ever got streetpasses though (nowhere near enough to beat anything though, it was like... 10ish maybe)

i watched my friend speedrun star fox 64 at magfest once

I'm pretty surprised at how many people here don't go to anime cons. That may require a topic itself...

I got a ton of StreetPass tags at cons back in the day (only 20 at this one, sadly) and played the games extensively at them until the queue was introduced, but it wasn't limited to one con.

Man I remember the days when I could just go about my normal daily business and get 5-10 Street Passes easily.

I went to ScrewAttack gaming convention once. They had an indie room set up, and one game I enjoyed so much I beat it in one sitting.

Of course, it was only like an hour long, but it was a fun hour.

Only like indie games that we're being demoed. But some were still over an hour of gameplay.

for context there's only really one yearly convention i can actually attend here without probably requiring a flight to reach (and it's really just a kinda mediocre pop culture convention) so i guess that's like the main reason i don't go to ones generally

I have never been to a con of any variety, so I didn't know they had games set up and was quite confused by this very specific question. I thought you meant bringing a 3DS or something and playing it during the con

Every single one I've been to has had a video gaming room. An independent contractor handles the games for all the conventions in the state, though consoles and TVs sometimes belong to the convention itself. You can play games on practically any console from the NES onward, so long as the game you want is available in the menu. There are literally thousands. Not quite sure how it would be in Japan, though!

Lucky you. I usually would get one back in the day, if that. Had to use my Play Coins to quite the extent. But man, do I miss that. Sucks that the Switch doesn't have it.

I don't really ever play a game at an anime con for a good amount of time. Anime cons here don't usually have video games featured anyway.

Magfest has a big game console game room but the best is the arcade and pinball room which is largely private owners who bring their machines. Dozens of rare or foreign games.

I kinda don't understand this.

Is there some kind of social or competitive component here? Or is this like, going in and taking a station and playing a game for a few hours?

I went to Ohayocon once in the mid 2000s and played in a melee tournament

The latter. Sometimes you have to kill time until the next event you want to go to and the video game room is great for that.

Please note that I was at the con for about 48 hours, most of which were not spent gaming. That was merely to have something to do when there weren't any panels/events I wanted to attend and I'd already cased the vendor hall. I didn't even start in the game room until late Friday night because I was doing so much else.

Do you play JRPGs? That is relevant to the con as well. I don't watch much anime, either, yet I go to conventions because there are like-minded people there, video games, cool merchandise, voice actor guests, and panels that are actually interesting and not exclusive to anime.

Perhaps, but there are non-anime cons I'd probably attend first, and I've never been to any of those, either. I'm reasonably certain that I'd find the convention novel for about an hour and after that I would be thoroughly bored.

I've been to an anime con exactly once, and did not play video games there

I just can't wrap my head around this. Going to a convention just to spend hours paying a video game by yourself....

Good way to pass the time between other things you're doing. I got my money's worth, and getting to play a game that I don't own was included in that value. Alongside going to six panels, getting Cassandra Lee Morris's autograph (and she read tarot for me and others), vendor hall access, talking to nerds, seeing cosplays.... you get the drift.

You guys are acting like that's the only reason I went to the con when it's a supplemental thing.

I don't usually spend a lot of time gaming at cons, if something's rare and interesting to me there's usually a big crowd for it

did get a lot of powerstone in once though! and windjammers like right before it was re-released
