Do you AGREE with Tarantino?

https://thedirect.com/article/chris-hemsworth-quentin-tarantino-movie-stardom-marvel

Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood isyou have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters. But theyre not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, Im not the first person to say that. I think thats been said a zillion timesbut its like, you know, its these franchise characters that become a star. Im not even putting them down frankly, to tell you the truth. But that is one of the the legacy of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood movies.

Look, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid. Theres an aspect that if these movies were coming out when I was in my twenties, I would totally be fucking happy and totally love them. I mean, they wouldnt be the only movies being made. They would be those movies amongst other movies. But, you know, Im almost 60, so yeah. No, Im not quite as excited about them.

My only axe to grind against them is theyre the only things that seem to be made, he added. And theyre the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement amongst a fan base or even for the studio making them. Thats what theyre excited about. And so its just the fact that they are the entire representation of this era of movies right now. Theres not really much room for anything else. Thats my problem.

@blue_inigo dude he's saying that IP is what draws people to the movies instead of movie stars. he probably thinks creed being a rocky adaptation was more important to its financial success than michael b jordan being in the movie. wtf!!! any thoughts on this bro?

My issue with the Marvel cinematic universe is it's the only thing that gets made nowadays. I go to movies to forget that an actor is in the movie. I had no idea that it was Tom Hanks in Elvis. I don't want to go to a movie to watch an actor play a character; I go to watch a character. I don't care about the actor. Ford vs Ferrari was brilliant like that.

I stopped caring about the Marvel cinematic universe after Endgame. Just don't care about it. Time to find another Cash cow, Hollywood.

That's exactly what it means. It means being famous enough that you as an actor mean more than the roles you're playing.

And Tarantino saying that just makes him seem out of touch because it implies people like Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, RDJ are not all huge names.

an actor who has such a commanding screen presence and persona that you know who their character is and what they're all about the moment they step on screen even when its a brand new original film.

denzel washington, tom cruise, john wayne, humphrey bogart, bette davis, elizabeth taylor, james dean, jimmy stewart, toshiro mifune - movie stars. you see them and no back story is necessary, you already know them.

chris pratt is a nothing actor in a bunch of nothing movies. what is uniquely chris pratt about jurassic world or guardians? why wouldn't you be able to just swap in any generic decent looking white dude who can do cringey reddit quips?

A "Movie star" is an archaic concept itself anyway. Yes, they're mostly recognizable as their MCU roles, but they don't seem as mythic or mysterious anymore when there's so much visual media that can be seen of them now

Sounds good to me. The illusion that the actor is the character is kind of the point of acting. If the character is bigger than the actor, then the actor did a good job portraying them.

Well, yeah, nobody prefers going to the movies much anymore. Especially since the Chris Evans examples are dramas - which are rarely boxbusters anyway - and people are more selective based on reviews and word of mouth. That doesn't mean they don't like the actors.

Damn right it is!

Also I like marvel movies, but theyve created an homogenization of what the typical blockbuster movie is supposed to be and studios have taken less risks and have tried to follow that big super hero money. Maybe thats why people loved Top Gun. A much needed return to form to an old school summer movie.

dramas are just as essential to see in theaters as anything else. but that's besides the point.

but you are correct that no one goes to movies anymore, especially not for the "movie stars." people go see movies for IP. and yet somehow people are finding ways to argue about this or get mad about it.

Tarantino's absolutely correct on that point in the technical sense, the question is whether or not the decline of 'star power' is a good thing. Personally I've never really been driven by the impetus of seeing 'the new Tom Cruise / Will Smith / Denzel' movie; I've always attached myself more to directors than actors when it comes to big names, and I don't think that side of it is really diminishing. Apart from the obvious reason of him being a classical cinephile, I can see why Tarantino would lament the decline of star power; it was no doubt a huge feather in his cap to land big names like Leo DiCaprio in his movies.

the answer is yes it is better

although i will say that i vastly prefer the star power of the old hollywood system. i am definitely all about following directors today but sometimes im like 'hey TCM is showing a 1940s movie ive never heard of that cary grant is in... maybe i should check it out' but i would never do that with any modern actor even though i think, yknow, joaquin phoenix or adam driver or elisabeth moss are some of the best actors ever. they just dont have a magnetic star persona that makes me feel like i could somewhat enjoy a movie just bc they are in it.
