Possibly. The GOP are garbage incarnate, so they'll never pass it and will do anything they can to block anything positive Democrats do.

More like:
>Nancy pelosi responds to question about canceling student debt by saying the president doesn't have that power a year before his executive order
>Biden does it anyway in an election year and the court cases aren't settled until after the votes have been cast
>Turns out he never in fact had the legal authority to just hand wave away arbitrary amounts of debt
>So instead he pushes back repayments until the next election cycle when he'll do it again.
>And people will fall for the same stupid trick over and over.

Can you point me into a legal scholar that said the president has the authority? She wasn't the only one questioning the legality of the move and you'd still be ignoring the fact that he waited multiple years in to sign the order knowing that challenges wouldn't be resolved until after the election.

The burden of College debt, interest payments and having other options in life aside from it is pretty common knowledge nowadays. And has been so for a good while now even as young as HS youth.

I admit most older millenials got screwed hard before society caught on. But for younger ones and zoomed there really is no excuse in this age of information.

You mean the multitude of lawyers and legal experts that say the 2 cases against the loan forgiveness have no standing?

I didn't ask about the cases, at least 1 of which is going to be thrown out because the plaintiffs can't show harm to themselves therefore they can't bring a civil suit, which you either know has nothing to do with the legality of the order and are being intentionally disingenous, or you had no idea at which point WTF are you even doing trying to argue this in the first place? I also asked for a link to a legal scholar claiming that the executive order was legal in the first place, not your personal anecdote on whether the civil suits challenging it had been challenged by lawyers.

Here's the difference between us: We agree that tuition cost is a problem. We agree student debt is a problem. We agree something should be done to address debt. The difference is I want congress to directly address it (as is their authority) rather than further empowering executive order, and you don't give a shit about the legality of the means as long as you get what you want.

Is your argument "we're not holding congress accountable for not doing their jobs, so I'm presenting a false dichotomy: either we let the president do whatever the fuck he wants on a whim, legality be damned, or we sit back and just pretend like nothing will ever get done again"?

"Congress won't approve it" isn't an actual argument for letting the president forgive arbitrary amounts of debt with an order. You know that, right?

You know in a weird way these extensions on the forbearance before forgiveness are actually optimal for some people. If you're working toward the 10-year PSLF and have greater than 10,000 (or 20,000 with pell) in loans then each extension is another set of qualifying months toward full forgiveness of your entire loan balance. For me I'm just waiting for the 10,000 to wipe my loans clean, but for others every extension is a small victory.

My alternative is to do like much of Europe where they actually don't re-elect representatives that vote against their best interests, and then get congress to do their job and pass laws to forgive any debt they can legally forgive. If you're looking for something more creative, then maybe have the fed create a new program to let students refinance their current loans into interest free ones? I'm sure there are less sexy legal options out there that can still help, but those don't have the same impact as having a big debt forgiveness signing ceremony leading into the midterms knowing full well what you're doing isn't legal in the first place.

This isn't about what will create a near-term quick fix. I'll say it again:
