I never really got into it. I know someone reads some shit and then someone else gets killed, or something...?

I was wondering in particular because that gunman at Walmart had a "death note" on his phone "explaining" why he did what he did. And so I was wondering if it had anything to do with what you guys talk about with this other death note.

The gunman's "death note" seems to be like a suicide note, except for killing others, not himself?

To expand on the anime/manga, the Death Note is found by Light Yagami, who's a popular, attractive, brilliant high school (and later college) student, and is the son of a police chief. He basically immediately decides to use this new power to kill criminals in order to become worshipped like a god. The story mostly focuses on the mind games between Light and the group of detectives/police trying to catch him, led by L, and assisted by Light's father.

Light is very much a villain protagonist.

Yes, like suicide note. Except they kill others, not themselves.
Death note, manifesto, call it what you want: it has nothing to do with the anime, it seems.

They are unrelated.
The Walmart shooter had a text file that he called Death Note, in which he explained that the other workers had mocked him and compared him to a serial killer. He also wrote to not kill a specific guy because he had cancer, which his mother had died of.
He ended it with asking God to forgive him.
So it was just a note by him to remind him why he did it. He probably read it just before the shooting, to give him strength to do it.
