It makes sense because it's an older game but I'm not sure how I feel about games going from the things you habitually play to time capsules you occasionally pick up and revisit years later. I was playing Pokemon Leaf Green for the first time in over a decade and I just finished the E4 rematches which is about as far as I remember the game going. I never felt I was thorough with any of the Gen 1 games or their remakes and went for it. I fought every single trainer I could find and spoke to them after the match, lots of them again with the VS Seeker to see their new lines. If something was wild and I didn't have it already, I tried to catch it, got all non-event legendary Pokemon and I nicknamed everything I caught except my starter who I appreciate way too much to rename. I ended up with about 80/151. I like the Sevii Islands. Way back when I first played them I mostly saw them as a bunch of hoops you had to jump through to unlock trading with RSE. They still are but I like how distant and unconcerned with the main game they seem, both the general atmosphere and the trainers you talk to. Between that and the Johto Olivine/Blackthorn City Music, it was comfy. The sign on Five Island was captioned Where time goes. I really liked that and it went with the vibe I was getting. The end was funny too. I was really underselling Mewtwo, because I wanted to be certain I wasn't being overconfident. I had a balanced team of mid lv60s and I was coming up with E4 rematch strategies based on what I remembered, only to then find out that a Mewtwo with Ice Beam/Thunderbolt/Flamethrower/Psychic can indeed walk through all of them in ten to fifteen minutes. Have you ever seen that "Wake up bro it's 2006!" video with the Gman? That's all I could think of when I turned the console off. The Pallet Town music, the main light source in front of me, my new/old at the same time Pokemon team and the streak of enjoyment I'd been on for the past couple of days were all there and a second later they were gone. A weird part of me likes this. Strangely, the most bittersweet part of this is that I think this is the first time I've gone through a Pokemon game without losing a single battle. I could technically go round again but these old games only give you one save per cartridge and overwriting a Pokemon save is one of the most hideous feelings I know. I have returned to the present day video game dystopia and require another video game. --- Still waiting on that third threat ... Copied to Clipboard!
