It's just Ryu paying his uncle a friendly visit.

In order to do so, he has to kill 50 of his uncle's buddies and then beat his uncle's ass.

Like, imagine if you were going to Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, but before you can sit down at the table and eat, you must beat up your uncle and 5 of his buddies to earn the privilege to sit down at the table.

Its fucking ridiculous but I love it.

Doubly so since you can't get the Flying Swallow until the airship, the third level in the game, when you can upgrade your sword to the next tier and unlock it.

Thinking about it now, there's no reason Ryu couldn't have started Chapter 3 and beyond with the True Dragon Sword

actually, I believe thats you unlock it different in sigma, vs regular/black. Now that I think back on it.

You are probably thinking of the final boss. Which is also him, but there are no walls so the ability to wall spam is most assuredly not a strategy. The Flying Swallow works less consistently against him versus most of the other bosses as you have to use it three times in a row to consistently hit. In addition once they added the DLC/Black version he out and out counters you using the Flying Swallow rather than having normal boss AI for it.

Ah, you're right. You get it from a chest in chapter 1 in Sigma.

Remember in OG Xbox/Black there was a water running mechanic, and it literally has 1 use as soon as they tell you about it

Ryu even talks shit about the first ninja he kills at the start of the level. "He had gaping holes in his defenses, so he wouldn't have lived long as a ninja anyway". Dude is kind of a dick.

Kinda hard to properly react to a ninja jumping off a waterfall lightning fast and attacking you

Can't Murai hurt/kill his own Ninjas? Imagine your uncle slapping your ass across the room while you try and help him.
