A way to really change up the formula would be to have gyms be type restricted, so its a contest of who can train the better mons of the type.

It would also encourage people to catch more Pokemon throughout a playthrough if they want to not be stuck with just one mon.

Plus, itd also play into how the anime treated gyms at time. Ash was just dumb and didn't know type advantages, but they had a whole arc about who was better with Pikachu vs Surges Raichu. Thatd be awesome to capture in the games.

Game Freak is literally incapable of grasping 3D development. Don't expect too much from them.

Gym should restrict use of super effective moves.

Because gamefreak doesnt want to actually challenge their fanbase, heck trainers never even switch out their mons when at a type disadvantage and always delete the oldest move for the newest move even if the new one sucks and the old one was their best move.

That's not challenging. That's annoying. If they want to challenge the fan base they would IV/EV train all gym leader Pokemon.
