The Fire Emblem one and Genshin Impact.
How did this happen? Is enthusiasm for other games spread too thinly? Are the majority of people here gambling addicts disguised as video game fans? You'd think a decrepit video game forum from another millennium would have some sort of resilience to this.

The default response would be 'waifus' but I never hear these people declare any substantial love for these characters either. I was under the impression waifus were meant to be a character you aspire after or use as a model for self improvement. These ones seem to be the same few models repurposed, given different outlandish hair and pincushioned with stupid looking accessories. That and they try to goad you into feeding them your money as you spin the wheel to try and unlock them.

Are the games so insubstantial to play that the forums are kept alive by people who treat reporting their bad luck like it's part of the game? Spin the wheel, be disappointed, go to the forum and try to spin it into some kind of camaraderie or easy attention?

I want you to be better than this, GameFAQs. Step 1, admitting you have a problem. Please just tell me how you became like this.

Fire Emblem Heroes for mobile is down as a gacha game, there's microtransactions, it's a spin the wheel to get the character thing, the forum has an f2p guide which is telling.

So the hippest trend in video games is shallowness? You never hear anything about personality with these characters, it's always appearance and how much cuter the one with the spatula taped to the side of her head is than the one with the Christmas lights tangled up in her hair. And sometimes even worse, they make it sound like their tastes are dictated simply by how rare the character is.

I suppose waifu sounds a little better than simping for a cut and paste anime girl, so it makes sense they'd distort the word and hide behind it.

Waifu culture predates simping culture man.
Stop calling it simping and start calling it waiting.

Your version of this entails no actual commitment. You make a mad dash after whichever one is the newest or the shiniest. The word waifu comes from wife which even if you have multiple of them, suggests you have some kind of commitment to these.

With v-tubers existing, people lusting after and sending money to generic anime girls is a very real form of simping. Waifus were a thing on the internet before simping really kicked in but that doesn't mean the gacha addicts aren't closer to the simp end to the waifu end.

Ah, it's just been knocked off by either Splatoon 3 or SF6. Maybe they have microtransactions and the usual suspects came running, who knows?
Press more game boards, it's still on the list waiting to surface again.

Bump.
I understand these being popular on the whole, but I'm especially disappointed to see the denizens of an ancient video game forum falling for it like any random chump.

What happened?
You have to know if you support video games doing this sort of thing, it's what we'll get more of, but many seem content with that. What made you treat your old hobby this way?

Idk, Genshin's pretty solid, despite its flaws. I don't really play gacha games for the most part though, I just thought this one looked like a neat action RPG and ended up falling a bit too deep down the Genshin rabbit hole I guess.

I mean, this just makes it sound like you think the only thing there is to gacha games is the gacha element itself. I can't speak for FEH at all, but Genshin is built on having BotW-style exploration in a mostly open world (there are a few regions that are story locked), with entire new areas being added consistently. New characters are added about once a month or so as well, and the game has an ongoing major storyline, as well as several smaller events and stories on a frequent basis. Basically, there are a lot of constant updates that facilitate discussion, whether it's the exploration aspect, how new characters fit into the existing teambuilding meta, story/lore, talking about what is/may be coming next, etc.

And even the gacha side of it has a bit more than just talking about luck, by virtue of knowing well in advance which character banners are coming up and being able to plan for it, and because the pity system makes it far less of a complete gamble to just shoot for a character.

I'm familiar with some of the tricks, they give you a game, let you play for a while and feel accomplished, have your progress slow down and then start nudging you with microtransactions. You make a seemingly small purchase and now you've crossed the line, you've told yourself it doesn't matter, how far you fall down the hole from there is on you.

That last bit about being able to hedge your bets might technically be true but it absolutely still deserves to be lumped in with the rest of the tricks to get you spending. Calling them events and telling you you're drawing up a battle plan to accomplish something great is just more bells and whistles. They are getting you to give your money and spin the wheel. Even if you win then only so much of the so called accomplishment was yours.
Valve used to do this on TF2 without the fanfare, every few updates they'd rotate what was in the lootboxes around, unusuals were a constant, they swapped the regular weapons in the boxes out for strange weapons with killcounters to convince, you'd get halloween/summer/christmas lootboxes touting their limited seasonal availability, tempting you like your character banners. There was always something to cram them into a spotlight and turn somebody's head.

When I see people talk about this game, the world, music and story take a distant backseat to the characters' appearances (I don't think I've ever seen anyone say anything interesting about these characters' personalities.) and even more so, saving up to spin the wheel. I'm sure the former's all there in all its drip-feeding glory but that makes them what, the guy in the casino giving you free drinks and food to keep you at the table? I'm doubtful of the whole thing.

Things weren't messed up irrevocably at the drop of a hat, it persists because its supporters persist too.
I just want to understand the apathetic, willing participation in keeping it going. Especially from a site like this where you could fairly assume it would be shunned.
