JAKARTA, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Indonesia's parliament is expected to pass a new criminal code this month that will penalise sex outside marriage with a punishment of up to one year in jail, officials have confirmed.

The legislative overhaul will also ban insulting the president or state institutions and expressing any views counter to Indonesia's state ideology. Cohabitation before marriage is also banned.

Decades in the making, the new criminal code is expected to be passed on Dec. 15, Indonesia's deputy justice minister, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, told Reuters.

The code, if passed, would apply to Indonesian citizens and foreigners alike, with business groups expressing concern about what damage the rules might have on Indonesias image as a holiday and investment destination.

Imagine going to Indonesia for a tropical beach vacation and getting sentenced to a year in jail because you bazonka'd your bf in your hotel room.

Presumably this would also criminalize homosexuality in the country flat.

This is the thing a lot of people in western countries just don't get. In places like Indonesia, they don't really have "separation of church and state"

I see that they just had a volcano erupt, so maybe theyre trying to appease to it by going uber conservative.

For the sake of their economy they should make hotels safe havens for foreigners. Bc what fucking incentive will people have to go there if youre not married. Hell, the fact that theyre so backwards conservative just scares me. Who knows what else they could pull during a visit.

This may come as a shock to you, but countries can have pretty different cultures.
And rules.
And culture can be tied to religion.
Which affects said rules.

All this. Suprisingly to some, there are many countries who aren't as advanced as the US and other countries are with tolerance.. no matter how shocking that is lol.

They are their own countries. Tourists do not have to go there if they can not follow or are scared of their laws, culture. or religion.
Hopefully, citizens there are able to leave if they need too.

The "different countries have different rules" argument holds up in theory but have you been to Indonesia?

The people there are not puritanical or desiring to be overrun by religious despots. They like to party and they largely want to be progressive. This is about control.

As ever this is just autocratic oppression, dont come into bat for a regime like that.

In Indonesia, you can only get divorced by court. It will try to force you to stay married and they will interview your relatives, which will hate you for misusing the holy marriage.
