Jessie: "Daddy lost his shot at happy, and its all your fault, Opie."
Narrator: Jessie had gone too far, and she had best watch her mouth.

It took me almost ten years to get this joke, a fact that fills me with deep shame every time I think about it.

"Opie" was Ron Howard's character's name on the Andy Griffith Show; "Opie" is often used as a pejorative for dorky white boys, so Jessie doing so is something the narrator took personally.

I knew the Opie character, I knew that there was clearly a joke there, but for the life of me I couldn't put two and two together for the longest time. Hell, I got the S3 narrator joke "No one is making fun of Andy Griffith, we can't stress that enough" right away, so I still don't get why the "Opie" joke took so long to click for me.

Honestly I love these shows like AD or PR but whenever they reference another movie or show that anyone born after 1950 definitely would have never heard of (obviously) it makes me wonder what the writers were thinking. Hell shows before the 90s were downright intolerable, they were just so bad. Even in the 90s you only had a few greats like 3rd Rock or Seindfeld or Frasier. Golden age of TV is when shows became as good if not better than movies

that's fucking hilarious

i knew the andy griffith line was obviously a joke at the show too but i'd never seen the show, i just figured it took place in a house or on a trailer similar to the cabin when it was being towed, so i just left it at that

I knew it was Ron Howard related, but that's as far as I knew so you definitely had a closer starting point than I did hehe

For example, the 5 Andy Richters joke. I'm sure that's a reference to something or other but not sure what. I only know the dude now from watching old Conan Obrian reruns and being like "oh, that's the dude who was in a couple AD episodes. Neat"

We are currently in a golden age of TV for sure.

Still airing shows like Barry, Curb, Severance, House of the Dragon, Succession, Better Call Saul (technically doesn't count because it's not airing but that JUST ended), etc. are just a few off the top of my head that are absolutely phenomenal and are far better than any move I've seen a long time.

The Andy Griffith Show is...well, you know how Boomer conservatives always want to drag American culture back to the good ol' days? Well, they're not actually nostalgic for the actual lives they lived in the 1950's; they're nostalgic for the idealized fictional slice-of-life cultures depicted in either Leave it to Beaver (if they lived in the suburbs), or The Andy Griffith Show (if they lived in a rural small town). I'm not exaggerating; my dad has said on multiple occasions and will a straight face how much better society would be if everyone behaved like they did on The Andy Griffith Show.

Still, it was a fine show outside of that context. And anything starring Don Knotts will always have some inherent worthwhile value.

Yeah the show is smart, but can we talk about how they made fun of the manic pixie dream girl trope before the term was even coined? Hell they got charlize theron who already played that type of character at least twice before starring in arrested development. I just think that's pretty brilliant especially since people wouldn't start to use that term or even notice it in movies and shows until years later, way after AD had long since been canceled and then brought back on.

I'd rather talk about how the creator of Arrested Development cameo'd in later seasons of Community as the character Koogler:

I actually liked season 4 back then while noticing how much weaker it was. Tried watching the edited recut episodes but couldn't sit through it.

Season 5 however was intolerable. Parts 1 and 2 were hilariously bad
