ok that's actually horrible. i'm all for stopping smoking for youngsters, but banning them for life is disgusting. i get the occasional cigar like once a quarter so it's not much for me, but it would really piss me off if i couldnt relax at a cigar lounge in vegas every quarter.

Buying cigarettes off the black market would be really tough... because if your dealer doesn't come through, you're going to be in a BAD mood

(I'm not condoning it, just imagining the situation)

Fine, take my specific instance out; it's still a horrible ban. Will absolutely lead to needing fucking cigarette dealers like they're weed dealers.

I understand it's not America, but if that happened here, you'd understand why it's such an awful ban.

And keeping vaping just shows "health and death" is not on their radar for reasoning behind this.

Cool you stepped back, but you wont get agreement from me. As far as Im concerned, tobacco should be forced to extinction. Its not like theres a worthwhile need for it.

This make no sense.

You say this because you've grown up with the habit and it's been a shaper on how you experience downtime in your life.

This is targeting young people who have not yet had that formative relationship with tobacco.

Any studies on if going to this extreme will actually work? Seeing as attempts at complete prohibition usually seems to backfire. I've always figured banning the sale of cigarettes but allowing the few remaining addicts to buy tobacco to make their own was probably the best endpoint.

I get your stance on that and I don't even necessarily disagree in a vacuum about having a worthwhile need for tobacco, but at what point does it stop? There isn't a worthwhile need for alcoholic beverages either. Or candy and ice cream.

The government shouldn't be drawing the line. That's my only overarching point.

Bad take.
Healthcare is subsidized/government funded in NZ.
They have every right to put a stop to a nasty ass habit that kills thousands yearly and creates a longterm draw on Healthcare systems.

Tobacco has made 100s of millions sick, sickly or dead and the healthcare costs associated with this freedom has cost billions. I dont think its a stretch to view ice cream under a different light.

AlcoholI dont have an answer, yet, Ive never felt the answer to a difficult question is to do nothing at all. Children all around the world still choose to start smoking, what answer is there to stop that from happening other than some form of action?

Im all for the extinction of this poison.

That is a fair point. It's hard for me to step back and view it in a non-American light. Here, if someone wants to smoke until they need $100k lung surgery, that's on them. But when that same person's $100k lung surgery is being paid for by my taxes, then I would concede, it is fair option to stop those crazy expenses.

In the NZ context of subsidized healthcare, I'm inclined to agree. And I wouldn't fault anyone for wanting the world to be rid of the stuff.

But in countries where taxpayers aren't on the hook for the chain smokers' surgery, it's still crazy to be in favor of giant sweeping bans like that.

Added point about the vaping too. That shit's just as bad for you.

I agree with the decision but saying it's "am impossible burden" when it's a burden that they've been carrying for as long as their health system has existed and smoking was already at historically low levels is a bit much.

I'm going to note that if you think that the US is a country where taxpayers aren't on the hook you're wrong.

The US doesn't have universal public Healthcare but we do have it for the poor (medicaid), the old (medicare), and a signicant portion of veterans (the va) and those groups just happen to have higher rates of smoking than the general population.

It's over 1.3 trillion a year in public spending at this point. We actually spend a similar amount per person on public spending as New Zealand (public and private we spend almost 3 times as much per person as NZ).
