Yeah it makes the edges of text smooth so you don't see sharp aliasing around curves but that hardly adds as much to the experience as Apple claims it does. Going back and forth between high and standard DPI displays isn't noticeable unless you're specifically looking for the differences.

It made a pretty big difference when they upped the dpi back in 2010.

I guess it matters on phones more than PC monitors (I'll admit I haven't seen a standard DPI phone display in a long time). When you've got a lot of screen real estate and each letter of text takes up less of a percentage of the screen space than on a phone the effect tapers off.

Yes. It's the "Apple" way of saying high DPI (dots-per-inch, aka "PPI" or pixels-per-inch). When the pixels are so close to each other to the naked eye it's impossible to see aliasing along the curvature of rounded edges (since no digital display is capable of showing a true curve).

Retina is just apples terminology for high DPI. It took quite a while for other phones to catch up to apple
