I guess in a way you can say that about the whole "holiday" season. But, especially friends. I got a friend or two who will want to exchange gifts, and they kind of ferret out how much they wanna spend. And I'm just thinking to myself, "bitch, if you wanna spend $100 in trade of gifts, why don't we just keep the hundred and leave it at that...?"

You go through this type of thing?

Weird, I just take it as an opportunity to demonstrate to people I care about that I value their friendship through the symbolic offering of a gift during a time generally known for the exchanging of gifts.

The best way to make that stop is to say "I'm not exchanging gifts this year" ahead of time.

And if they get you something anyway, just take it and say thanks.

That's a pretty decent pan actually.

I got one friend that almost always sends me $50 Uber Eats gift card. And I feel bad because I have no idea what the fuck ever to get him. I thought about getting him a gift card too, but then again I'm like, what's with this rope-a-dope...

Pretty much this. I have way too many friends to buy stuff for. Now if I am with them around the holidays or at their birthday, I will buy them a drink or something. But buying gifts just causes stress with everyone feeling they have to return the favor.

I buy stuff for my kids, my fiance and my parents. That's it.

Exchanging gifts is something you're supposed to have fun with. Like, if we're exchanging gifts, I'm going to prank you by wrapping it in a fake box. Or by wrapping it in multiple boxes. How many boxes will you unwrap before you get to the actual gift? Only I know

This. If I care about the person enough, I'll give them gifts. I try to keep it to within reasonable expectations, though.

See, I remember a loooooonnnnggg time a go I bought a good friend a new CD for Christmas. And more than anything it just embarrassed him because like the first thing that came out of his mouth was, "it's going to be a while [for me to give you a gift back]". And he looked sad. I wanted him to be happy, I was like hey whatever. But, I just don't like that kind of awkwardness.

My friends and I have an agreement that our "gift giving" is always via Steam. We go through each others Wish List and find something they've wanted for awhile. Something they obviously either are waiting for a HUGE deal on or just wasn't the right time for them.

Then you buy it and gift it and there you go, new game.

But what if they don't get me one and feel bad? Or what about the fact that I have dozens of friends and about 20 of them know each other, and if I get things for some I "care about enough" but not others...

I like giving people gifts but IMO giving friends gifts for the holidays is messy.

yup. i just bowed out of all December gift exchanges like 15 years ago and my life has been much easier. not more worrying about what im gonna buy everyone. no more rushing around on busy weekends going shopping. no more massive CC bills at the end of December.

i swear it's much better this way.

Then just communicate that with them lol.

"Look (X friend). I really appreciate you giving gifts to me for Christmas but I'm super tight on my budget this year. I'm not sure if I can reciprocate this year so if you don't give me a gift then I totally understand!"

Then if you want, you can include how you're kinda ass at thinking of ideas for gifts if it applies to you

Yep

Also, I truly am not trying to sound like a dick, but I think those who really like giving gifts for their friends probably have a lot less friends than I do. And to be fair, I often wish I just had a few really close friends I see on a regular basis. Because of how my life blew up after my divorce, I got involved with a couple very large social circles, and now that is also merged with my fiance's friends, and it is almost unmanageable. I feel like I am letting all my friends down by having to juggle when I actually have time to see them. Plus, I have my kids a third of the time. Gift giving is just an extra nightmare on top of that.

Yeah, I can see how that would be an issue for someone that's very social. I have a very small circle of friends, so it's not an issue if I get them something

As I said above, I kinda wish I had less friends, but the ones I have, I would see much more often. And I can't just cut back so to speak, as most know each other.

If I can afford it I'll do it but I never have an expectation of getting a gift back. I just like seeing their faces when I give them a gift. If they have kids I get their kids a gift instead. I mean it's usually those universal gift cards that you can use anywhere that way I don't have to go through the struggle of figuring out what they want and they can just go get what they want. Easy and people love that.

If they're not:
  • family
  • your BFF
  • or a talented fuck buddy
don't bother with gifts above $25.

People outside your family are lucky they get anything at all from you on what is supposed to be a predominately household oriented holiday. The rest are just leeches after freebies. Commercialism convinced the leeches they're intitled to your stuff too.

Give the best gift to yourself by not falling for that crap.

Yes, pick and choose your priorities. If you have that many friends, it might not be wise to give them all gifts. Maybe just relegated to one or two really close ones and something small. Everybody has different life expectations and priorities. I have two or three really close friends that I have no problems giving gifts to, because I am not a very social person and I want to take care of my friends.
