You can have 56g in Colorado. Well, you can legally buy 56g at a time, but I think you can legally be in possession of several pounds as long as you legally grew it and followed the rules.

Get a lawyer, though. 100% get a lawyer. Go get a part time job to pay for it if you have to, just make sure you hire a lawyer. That makes the difference in going to prison or serving a year of probation.

If police came while he was in his backyard smoking, that means someone saw him from afar smoking in his backyard and called the cops on him. VERY HIGH chance it was a neighbor somewhere close by. On a side note, cops need a warrant to enter and raid his house like that. IF they had a warrant, then that means they were tipped off in advance and might have supplied them with some type of evidence (someone most likely ratted him out a good while before cops finally got around to going after him. If that's the case, it could be anyone he knows who ratted him out, even though the chances of it being a neighbor (somewhere around where he lives) that was the rat are still significantly high. One of the reasons why it's NOT a good idea to smoke outside, even if it's your backyard, if you are in a state with stricter laws regarding weed). IF the cops didn't have a warrant, that might give his lawyer some "legal ammunition" to defend him. Cops have limits in regards to breaking into places and raiding them and it's strongly possible they may have illegally broken those limits. Hopefully he has enough money for a good lawyer (if he can only get a public defendant, his chances are much worse when the trial comes).
