with Kojima, assuming he started writing MGS2 in the 90s, the stuff about superfluous info people would focus on as news, that was already a reality (I was there!); it wasn't predicting the internet, just one with more trash.

stuff about shaping society in a way they (the Patriots) wanted is something that has always been around, with providing selective info, propaganda, etc.

I'm not criticizing the game or its themes, btw, but I think people overstate how "visionary" it is.
Yeah, that's probably true. I guess with the rise of social media and just how predominant "junk data" and misinformation has become, to where it's integrated into the fabric of society was way more spot on than most of us imagined back then.

I mean, how many social media platforms were there and how widespread were they really? LiveJournal? I was there too and it wasn't nearly as out of control and everything he said was to a tee.

Impresses me way more than Orwell copying the plot of We.

I thought he was just said to have been inspired by We and not to have copied it, but I haven't read it, so idk.

It's not outright plagiarism, but once you read We you definitely can see he took a lot from it. Didn't know he made a public statement on being inspired by it.

this is from the We wiki page:

Orwell began Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949) some eight months after he read We in a French translation and wrote a review of it.[30] Orwell is reported as "saying that he was taking it as the model for his next novel".

Its an open world game where there is nothing to do. Probably the worst game in series.
so basically, like every open world game ever made except breath of the wild and elden ring

The gameplay is SO good, I almost want to give it a pass on some things, like the plot, Mother Base being kinda boring, and the awful item development system (which functions in real time, IIRC, so you can spend weeks developing security cameras and stuff). If you ignore the plot parts, which are tolerable but not exceptional, you can just have fun raiding bases, stealing resources, doing side missions, playing with gadgets, finding rare soldiers/critters to capture, etc. If you've ever played MGS VR Missions and treat MGS5 like that -- a series of fun missions with nothing too amazing connecting 'em -- you might find the enjoyment you seek.

Kind of a shame the game penalizes you for murdering your enemies Rambo-style, but oh well. Just Kojima being Kojima.

Eh it wasn't too bad on punishing you for killing. I just went close to half and half on lethal vs non lethal. Farmed saving kids here and there.

I went full murder machine once and the permanent bloodstains kinda ruined the fun of stealth warfare. Farming those side missions to bring down your bad karma was fine, though. In fact, I probably spent more time doing those missions for cash and resources than I did with the actual story. Loved that whole area around Nova Braga Airport and those li'l bases nearby.

You need tons of resources to do the Mother Base/weapons/vehicles upgrades, and that's before even factoring in specialist stuff. IIRC, there are a few missions where you can start them, fulton out tons of freight containers, then restart ad infinitum. I think that's the easiest way to acquire tons of resources compared to other stuff. That's one of the reasons I like Nova Braga airport so much.
